Wanted: bike for going to work on
April 07, 2010, 05:19:31 am
in a bid to save a few pounds and also to lose a few as well, i'm going to start biking to work now its getting a little warmer. its a 7 mile round trip and i need something with a few gears as there is a bit of a hill, tarmac all the way tho. does anyone have anything that will fit the bill that they want rid of. obviously don't want anything expensive cos it'll probably get nicked and my budget is only a handfull of fuck-alls.
cheers

That's all well and good for him, but I can't see Jim doing any of that without spilling his loaves.

A couple of bungee cords, a nice front mounted rack, and he'll be fine

Have you checked out the cycle to work scheme? I thought it was a bit of a pain in the arse to get, but J E James are still advertising 50% off (or paid for by government?) under the scheme, including the stuff in their sale.

You don't really get money off your bike when you purchase it, you pay full whack of what the shop is selling it at.  You save money though because you pay for the bike using money you have earnt, but before you have income tax deducted from it, basically its salary sacraficing.  The irony is that this benefits the people who need it least (i.e. those who fall into the highest tax band).

Ebay is probably your best bet. If you're serious about it being a permanent thing, i'd probably err on the side of spending a few quid, otherwise you'll get a shit bike, which will seize up and fall apart and you'll hate it and go back to driving. Personally, I'd go for something more road based as they're much more efficient. And definitely get some mud guards - you get much wetter from the road than you ever do from the sky.

You can have my old bike for nowt but it's fucked and will need a bit of work to make it roadworthy.

see you, Joe

might take you up on that Joe,
just need something to get me started, obviously if its raining/freezing cold etc... then I'll be driving to work.
I just want something to test the water initially as I work 12 hour shifts and a 7 mile bike ride ontop of that might be a bit much.
If it all goes well then I'll be looking to spend a few quid on something better.
I'm also going to be moving house this year (hopefully no further away from work) so don't want to spend money and then end up moving miles away and the driving to work.
Cheers

Let me know. How flat is your bike ride? it would be really cheap and easy to put a single speed back wheel on my old bike. If not, it would be pretty easy to get it going again. It definitely needs a new chain and possibly a freewheel (the set of sprockets on the back). The bottom bracket clonks a fair bit, but I reckon it's got a few miles left in it. Brakes and wheels are pretty good.

It's an old 531 frame, so it's pretty light and rides nicely. I definately rate a regular bike ride for keeping fit.

Probably see you over at the cave sometime soon.
