as per title, want to knock a few mp4 clips together real quick without having to learn anything.
Anyone got any suggestions?

suggests you just use a linked free avi converter first. Things like Vegas aren't difficult to use for just trim and transitions, I know its overkill but you don't have to use all of the functionalty.

no point converting to avi as will lose quality and resolution.
will give vegas a shot
tried premier before and got confused so deleted it

I find Vegas Pro less intuitive than Premiere Pro, but that may just be me.

You could try this, pretty basic though.

Sony Vegas Studio Platinum 9 is a basicized version of Vegas Pro 9 and so should be easier to get to grips with

Moviemaker doesn't seem to do MP4

It does do MP4 - I use it for knocking together clips from my Nokia.

There are a few types of MP4 I think - I had issues getting mine working, but I downloaded some codecs and it sorted the problem. Unfortunately I can't remember what codecs or where from. But if you can get it working, it's the easiest and quickest program by far (alongside imovie), and perfect for bashing together low quality stuff.
