netbooks, 3G dongles and suchlike
February 07, 2010, 07:14:29 pm
Okey dokey..

I have  a family member who needs

- a new computer, small power... fast start up and good 3 G internet connectivity...

- something simple.. this is for work only.

- not too dear.

- what I believe a cloud...( some shared server that 3 or 4 peeps can work on docs and thus save a large inefficient amount on sending  emails &  using usb sticks.. that often go astray...) could be useful.

There must be a simple answer, though I doubt work will pay as long,  as the costs are reasonable then that will be fine.

thoughts / ideas and solutions welcome.

Cheers.

Netbook/cheap laptop depending how large they want it. I think theres a netbook/laptop thread somewhere?

For 3g dongles.. I dunno - depends on coverage & how often you use it I use a voda one and its fine for what I need...

For sharing files, I use dropbox (dropbox.com) free for up to 2gb and you can share files between users.

Consider using Google docs for shared work, shows whose edited what. Live Mesh looks good too, not really played with it yet but should be good. https://www.mesh.com/welcome/default.aspx

Netbook wise, Samsung NC10s are still nice, and now cheap aswell. Good batt life. Make sure you get one which takes a SIM card inside, plugging in an external dongle into a netbook seems a shame.

Check out http://alatest.co.uk/reviews/mini-notebook-reviews/c3-354/

My phone is on three for 3G, coverage OK although I believe Vodaphone is better overall for 3G coverage.

There are quite a few deals including a variety of laptops  for 'free'. can't help but think you'll end up paying more over 24months than getting a cheap netbook and a separate dongle contract. Got my father in law on the month long contract from '3' as it could be handy not to be tied in if technology changes in a year or so.

I know, sad that it may be... but if there were ever a device that wasn't fit for purpose that'll be it  :'(

iBoard of it already, but if there's some good beta on 3g dongles (including prices) I'd be interested to hear it.
