Ron Book to end all Ron Books...
February 12, 2010, 12:25:18 pm
"Come on arms, do your stuff!"

Yo. Those of you who got bored of me banging on about Jerry ‘Malc went from climbing 7c+ to 8c+ in an afternoon’ Moffatt’s book last year will love me even more now! We’ve just finished Big Ron’s book and we should be taking stock in about 3 weeks time. Cue me banging on about it for the next 3 months. Sorry.

As with Jerry’s, a shitload of work has gone into this too, and we’ve really pleased with the result. The guy is a total legend.

We’ve put a handful of mini-excerpts up here: www.ronfawcett.com

…and the boys from UKC will be running an extended excerpt, probably next week.

If anyone wants to see Big Ron in the flesh (apart from going down the Climbing Works most days of the week ;) ) then we’re launching the book at Outside Café on 10 March with only 50 or so tickets available.

He’s also doing a big lecture at the Climbing Works a few days before – Sunday 7 March.

Does it have a full list of Ron's variations on The Green Traverse? Or is that going to be volume 2?

I should mention this is just book 1. Volumes 2-10 will cover Green Trav, top lip hair etc.

Awesome. Good to see the BT shot on the cover. Hopefully no sideways photos like fawcett on rock.

Did they ever find out who came on his arms?

Does it have the bit about how Vickers went from top roping E1 to onsighting 8a+ overnight just by staring really hard in one direction and not smiling?

lets hope it's more *warts an all* than the shite veneer of aspects of Jerry's story that could have been truly riveting to read.

be good if the subject of the book doesnt sue people for their honest view points an all.....

in addition, whats the new site owners view on blatent self promo post of their business like this??

al the ronin pad shizzle ( way small fry admittedly) we cleared with bubba pre post... are verterbate paying for this?

dont want to be a downer... but if you are promoting another glossed over, shallow and rather tedious read then the publisher should pay the now more fiscally orientated site.

- personally I was amazed the jerry book won an award-

Cool - a colour advert banner at last  ;D

I clicked on it and it didn't go to Ann Summers  :o

I ended up on some vegetarian site with some scouser guy called Rob Tap or something daft selling a book.

Anyway I pre-ordered the book, I hope it will tell me how to style my hair like him  8)

I have to say that the banner ad is far from intrusive, pretty cool and doesn't really take anything away from UKB. Which is nice. Now who's this Ron Jeremy fellow?

Pretty harsh review. I loved it. Got me psyched. Meh.

They have a banner ad up so presumably advertising is not a problem. Have just ordered mine, can't wait.

I have to admit I was a little underwhelmed, nothing particularly bad about it, it just didn't do it for me. I read the majority of it on a train over to Pen Trywn and the rest was left unread until 4 months into my trip when I'd read everything else I'd taken.

Hasn't Ed Douglas written the Fawcett biog? If so, then I don't understand the publishers reluctance to use his name? Presumably a royalty thing? His biogs of alison hargreaves and tenzing norgay are v good and he's one of the best outdoor/mountaineering writers in the UK. I suspect the Fawcett book will be very well written. Shame it's not obvious who's written it!

P.S. I actually really enjoyed 'Revelations', though I agree there wasn't much 'juicy' in it.

Ed has ghostwritten Ron's, as I posted further down on the previous page. A more low-key approach was (an informal) part of the agreement, nothing to do with royalties/reluctance. The Hargreaves/Norgay books were biogs rather than autobiogs, hence the difference in approach; Ron is still alive so it's still his story. I certainly agree though that Ed is one of the best outdoor writers in the UK, and probably further afield too.

Thanks all for the feedback on Jerry's book. I'd be pretty surprised if absolutely everyone enjoyed it.

Do they still sell shorts in a similar style to that Ron is wearing on the front cover?  If not, potential new clothing line oppurtunity for big Ron. Could have "Come on arms do your stuff" on the rear.

Am half way through, it is great, will finish it tonight. I like it best how he talks about how he feels when as a kid from a little Yorkshire village he finds himself as a teenager in Yosemite, and how people like Pete Livesey and Paul Williams took him under their wing, and some of the setbacks he's had on non-climbing fronts. Very good for general reflection on life. Ron was a great climber, we all knew that, what's interesting is finding about him as a person & how he's handled life.

Stopped by Vertebrate to buy another one as a pressie.

People will compare it to the Jerry book. I laughed outloud more often with the Jerry book, and also learnt more things I didn't know about the climbing, though this is very much a function of my age (46 last Sunday ;)) and when I was climbing. On the other hand, the Ron book told me more things about how the subject handled life in general, and its setbacks. Made me proud to be from Yorkshire ;) Very highly recommended, both for young climbers who've only seen these routes in iconic photos and films and for older bods like me. Well done to Ed Douglas and Vertebrate.
