Ye Olde "Rock Designs" Tees
January 27, 2010, 11:04:13 am
Anybody remember the early 90's classic climbing tees from Rock Designs? They used to sell by the tonne in Outside when I was a young shop wallah.
I am trying to find some images of those much loved designs.. Can anyone point me in the right direction or give me any info on the illustrator, as I totally can't remember his name. I can picture him in my head -blond hair?- but can't get any further than that...
Thanks in advance.

I remember them. I was in the Rock Designs which won the team bouldering comp at the Buxton Festival in about 1992. Our team was me, Johnny Welford, John Arran and Patta. I only mention this because it was the best I have ever climbed. Everything felt easy, I burned off Ben Moon, Gaz etc and was the best. Then Graeme pointed out a keg of free beer so I didn't climb as well in the head to head final thing.

The Rock Designs guy's name was Andy and he did have blonde hair but I can't remember anything else sorry.

I remember them, there was one of FBD as demonstrated here if you can see Facebook

There was also an Axle Attack design in a nice pastel green i think.

The designer was a guy who'd just finished college, can't remember his name right now.

Slackers, the FBD design is on the t shirt - look closely. Not the route he is on.

Didn't Paul Evans get involved with Rock Designs

I seem to remember a 'Today We Went Climbing' tee shirt

Also seem to remember RD did the NIBL Head to Head tee shirts when I was involved with the NIBL back in 1992. The design had 2 ostriches having a scrap. Will look through my vintage comp tee shirt box and see if I still have it

Is the next big thing in clothing design knocking out copies of 80 climbing gear? :)

Is the 80's still in? Surely we must be onto an early 90s revival by now..............ah, I see.

I've uploaded it to flickr so it's slightly larger and added another.

I'd like to see Stone Monkey stuff making a come back.  Mainly 'cause I enjoyed embroidering a 'd' between the two words on the one vest that I own  :P

Blam: Paul Evans. Thats the name I was looking for.. Nice one Gdog.

Some guy bought the name RD about 8 years back but failed to make it work. His name was Roo (or something like that) and used to work at the big gite in Noisy. He sponsored some of the BMC comps so I might have the odd tee shirt with his logo on if you're interested.

The Rock Designs guy's name was Andy and he did have blonde hair but I can't remember anything else sorry.

I think it was Andy Burgess, he used to give me cosmetic seconds. They were brilliant, the best climbing gear I've ever owned.

Here's one that someone uses for their avatar on the arbtalk forum - I'm sure this was a tee design from RD.

I also recall the 'sick earth' one - a big earth puking into a bucket between it's legs...

That looks more like the work of Simon Norris of Boring Marv/ November fame. He still works at VG.

He should pull his finger out and produce the sequel - December. I still think November is a work of genius.

Does that involve sticking tarts back on that have fallen off?
