Never used one before.

Depends on the OS (and version thereof) that you're using.

You'd stuck with XP if I remember correctly, but I've an inkling of a memory that you got a new computer recently and may be on Win7?

Can't help much with any personal recommendations/preferences but there's a comparison of 10 application launchers.

Or you could try greating your own

Seriously - why do want one?

I just use quick launch and have shed loads of icons across the bottom of my screen, never use the start menu or desktop.

I think the idea behind them is that you put the programs that you use regularly into a launcher instead of having to navigate through the menus to find them.

The other alternative is to simply not go with the default places for placing short cuts in the Start Menu and to organise these yourself as you install them.

Yet another alternative is to use keyboard short-cuts to start specific applications, or you could pull up the "Run" dialog and type in the program you want to start, but thats possibly anathema to some.

 to be fair - linux pisses all over windows in this area of customisation, no contest!

you could just have shortcuts on your desktop or have it in quicklaunch or if you have windows 7 then just pin the programs to your taskbar

I think the desktop shortcuts is a waste of time as you invariably have windows over them and its an additional step (albeit small, especially with assigned shortcuts) to minimise open windows to get to the desktop.

Not sure how the pinning to taskbar works but when I used windows (XP) I used to put shortcuts in the quick launch area.

:off: But have over the xmas period installed and playing with the configuration of Compiz Window Manager and it really is very cool, and predates the similar effects in Win7 by a number of years (I suspect its where M$ got many of their ideas from, but nothing to back that up).  Couple of random video on configuration and features..

The coolest thing is the cubes/3D effects

And it's good, especially to bring up programs, indeed any functions/devices etc.., especially those that are not revealed by pressing the windows key.

Very small. Hold down the windows key + press "D" will bring the desktop to focus. Do it again and your windows are displayed back as they were.
