I thought I'd try to hike for some turns, as they say, tomorrow. What would be the best hill near a train station to walk up and board down. I'm looking for up an hours hike up and an exciting decent, with not too many stone walls to hop. I thought I might try Edale and walk up Mam tor and board back down. Any ideas?

I know fuck all about this sport... But from early MTB excursions you need to get to the hill under win hill outside Hope or mam tor, old road side on the right as you look at the hill.

Btw, it's melting in Sheffield.

From my experience - look for N Facing, pref grass over any other surface, and as high as possible.

Thanks for you replies, but I was forgetting about the house I just bought. Only 3 weekends till we move in and no kitchen etc. BOLLOCKS. And it does look a bit melty and shit. The snow that is, house appears fine.

If you were still looking for the right hill - the hill where they fly radio controlled planes between Stanage North and Higgar. If there's been a N or E wind, loads of snow gets blown off the plateau and is dumped on this slope (watch out for rocks - build kickers in the right places). Got some pics somewhere.....

lots of snow on mam top today, but probably best not going down the side we climbed up. Possibly closer stations than Edale to get to the top, Hope might be quicker (maybe)

I went to the Roaches in the end, with my afternoon pass. Walked up from Upper Booth and spent a happy hour trying to get my hips in the right place to stand on the C3PO foothold.

There's been about 4" drop in Grindleford and probably much more on the tops.

Having said that I was still able to drive to Bakewell, overtaking a 4x4 on the hill out of Grindleford, don't these fuckers know how to drive?

Me and Westie had a bit up there this morning. It was good - a shed load of fresh snow over a pretty icy base, but we had a blast. Not every day you can lay down fresh tracks in pow 10 minutes drive from the Works. The roads a bit spicy, but no bother if you got 4WD.

word I noticed a fairly big sledging and snowboard scene going down in blingham park yesterday. might be hand for any S11 homies if you don't fancy the drive up to blinginglow.

Been out to Mam Tor today, really wind blown and scoured. Couple of gullys off the back (edale side) full of nice powder, but not really worth the 15 minute slog for 5 quick (albeit perfectly steep) turns.

Gully on the face was border(sic)  line. too many rocks poking out for my liking, Wants a really good dump and no wind for that one.

Saw a team walking up the road (Works Sam I think) just as we where leaving. Waddage for walking all the way from Castleton in horrible spindrift. I was lucky enough to have a lift up in a landy. I want one now!!.

- Well - at that time, yeah. We had a little traffic jam on the steep bit involving a grumpy JCB driver who was busy shifting snow (no grit like, which would have made a HUGE difference) and a 4x4 coming down. We all managed to avoid each other though. Was probably 4x4 from the top, round the hair pin and up to the car park at mam tor too. Oddly , it had been gritted from there onwards to Chapel, and was virtually clear. (as though the gritter came up from chapel, turned round at the car park and went back  )

How did the slopes N of the main face look?

  do you mean the ones north east of the face, on the castleton side - they where pretty grassy, with some wind blown filled gullys, You could have got some lines down them I think.

Off the back, north face, facing edale was equally scoured, due to the wind blowing right along from lose hill,
again a few small filled gullys, one of which I grabbed a few turns down, but not really worth the effort of walking again. Would love to get off the back of lose hill, if its not too scoured.

will post some piccies later

The steep sides of winnats may be worth a look tomorrow.
