Google Shit
December 08, 2009, 01:32:23 pm
After having started innumerable threads in this sub-forum about new innovations from Google I've decided its time to centralise them into one thread*.

Today Google announced real-time search.

* If any bored admins want to merge the other threads into here that would be great, here are the ones I've found/started...

Google Wave
Google Chrome OS
Google Swirl
Google on Caffeine
Google Street View
Google Phones (i.e. Android)

Out of interest, had anyone actually used Google Street View after the novelty of looking at your own house and couple of mates' has worn off? Seems like a lot of hassle for what it is.

I use streetview quite a lot, particularly since its available on the phone, handy to see what you're trying to find when you're in unfamiliar territory.

Anyway, the point of resurrecting this thread is I came across a Google-like search engine for rifling through web-servers that have an index of the files hosted.

Not that I'd ever condone the downloading of copyrighted material, but if you want to try it out go to Gooload.

Google street view is really useful for my job and I use it a lot. Where in the past I’d have to visit a highrise block to get the info to produce a quote, I can now usually get all the info on building layout from either Street view or Bird’s Eye view.Very useful.

I'm of the opinion that Google Maps and Street View is one of the most powerful free tools on the web. I use the Maps several times a week for personal use and have used Street View a huge amount at work. Trying to find good spots to install monitoring equipment and find safe spots to do spot sampling it has been an enormous help.

Funky use of Google Maps that overlays real-time London tubes on the map.

Handy if you can get a decent 3G signal in the city/tubes (or you could just look at the platform signs!).

It's great for female friendly directions as well - 'turn right at the blue house' type of thing. I'm walking the 14 peaks this weekend and I'm now pretty confident the mrs will be there at the end to pick me up.

Ooh - that's interesting, I too have the odd problem with OpenDNS...

So is it better?

And I managed to completely miss Google Voice for everyone

Wonder if its going to make it into Android 2.2, could save even more on the phone bill!

Just to clarify, though we've opened up sign-ups, Google Voice is still limited to everyone in the U.S. for now.

So not really everyone then.

 goodbye (to future development at least).

Never got into using it myself, found the UI rather cluttered.

This was a really good idea, and ultimately what microsoft implement with exchange 2010 and outlook 2010.

The problem with this trial was that it needed other people to be on it for it to work. As is always the case, you go on something to speak to people but if you cant because all your friends arent on it, then its of limited personal value.

I guess for things like that it has a threshold number of users before it serves any purpose. One that is passed and it becomes more commonly used, the popularity escalates rapidly.
