Torrent beef
November 07, 2009, 04:33:19 pm
Just lately I can't seem to use any torrent client on my mac. I can see seeds and peers but am unable to actually initiate any form of file transfer. Could this be connected to a router issue? I'm at a loss really so any advice much appreciated holmes.

Does your ISP block/throttle BT traffic?

I don't think so? Talk Talk I'm with. I did wonder however if they've started to do something like that as I've recently started broadcasting an internet radio station through the connection. Not sure what to do about it really.

This probably contravenes the terms of your contract with them, I know it does with Virgin.

As to the torrents, you could try using different ports, you'll need to change them on the torrent client and on any firewalls you have in place on your Mac and/or router.

Shaping/throttling/capping is all well and good, but it shouldn't go to zero, so its possible they're simply stopping all traffic on ports commonly used by torrent software.

I've tried randomising the ports in the settings dialog box a few times but to no avail. I'm using u torrent now instead of vuze but no change from this either. I can see seeds and peers but never connect to them. Very frustrating as I need frequent access to a lot of files.

What sort of firewall(s) do you have? Do you have one running on your Mac? Many routers have a built in firewall.

You would normally need to forward the BT ports through the firewall to get good results.

My mac one is configured to allow selected apps. But even prior to modifying this setting it was open to all traffic. I've also turned the router firewall off. As for forwarding the BT ports through the router I'm not too sure where to start?

I'm getting this problem with my Mac as well, but not my PC on the same router. Problem persists when I try to torrent on my Mac on other connections!

Tried a couple of trackers too! Will look into it

Try this place http://portforward.com/

Go down the list and find your router model, then choose which app (in this case Bit Torrent client) you want to configure. It will provide you with a step by step guide on how to change the ports in the app and in the router that you are using...

It's really good if you are unsure what to do/change.

On a more practical level Dr Nerd are you totally out of your depth here? I thought you invented the computer?

Have you got antivirus/software firewall (leopard) installed on your machine?

If you, have you tried disabling them both temporarily and trying the torrent client? One of them maybe blocking the transfers...

What client are you using? I had problems with azureus for ages and switched to transmission for better results.

Cheers J I tried that but still in the same boat. It must be something to do with my router but after some epic problems of late with it I'm not sure I want to dick around with settings anymore. I'll scour the forums some more. Thanks people. And Jim. ;)

reset to factory defaults on your router and start again with it.
Ditch vuze, its a bloated pile of wank, use utorrent.
go to portforward http://portforward.com/ and set up your router to forward the port that utorrent is using.
