Artists you wish you'd seen, but didn't
November 04, 2009, 09:41:43 pm
I've been thinking today about bands I'd love to have seen live, but for one reason or another never did.  I don't mean bands that split up before I was born, just people I could have seen, but didn't.

Mine are here:
Top 6-  Bolt Thrower
           Morbid Angel
           Primus
           Carcass
           My Dying Bride
           Yon Smiths

Others:
Satyricon (arrived late at the gig and missed them, not happy)
Aphex Twin (I've watched RDJ DJ a few times, but I mean a proper Aphex set)
Alice Cooper- not sure why, supposed to be good
Mogwai

I think I've left a couple out though.

So, boys 'n' girls, who are yours?

Led Zep, proper Genesis, the Pistols and Joy Division.

Seen most of the bands that I really like. Including Aphex Twin at the Arches in Sheffield - I thought my head was going to explode, absolutely awesome gig.

RHC before they were shit
Foo Fighters before they turned into The Eagles
Skunk Anansie (currently touring, but sold out)
Faith No More
Kiss in the late '70s early '80s in the States
Black Sabbath with Ozzy

I did see proper Genesis at the Six of the Best thing back in 1982. Although as Hackett was only there for the encore I am not sure it counts as a proper, proper Genesis gig.

Gabriel coming on in a coffin was pretty good though.

You mean the Polyphonic Spree?

Saw Pulp's last ever gig just to add to the general annoyance of others.

GCW - go and see Mogwai - seen them 5-6 times now and they are still up there as one of my favourite live bands of all time.

Yep, Mogwai do not disappoint. Where I saw them the venue had special notices warning of the volume. It is still the loudest gig I have been to to date.

Saw them at Leeds Uni a good few years ago now where they were selling earplugs on the door and recommending that you wore them - I bought some and was pleased that I did - they were seriously loud!  :o

Still not the loudest gig I have ever been to - that would probably have been Atari Teenage Riot at Nottingham (which also qualified as the most violent) though Alec Empire wasn't exactly quiet when I saw him a few years later...

On a DJ note I'd like to see Dave Seaman and Hernan Cattaneo as well.

Used to be a big Queen fan, would have loved to see them. They played Sun City while I was living close by, but couldn't get tickets. Thought I would get plent ymore chance, didn't realise freddy would be brown bread before long.

Would have loved to see Tangerine Dream or Jean Michel Jarre doing one of their big city music and light shows back in the day.

Also Waters era Floyd.

Back in the late 80's when I was still at school and didn't drive, I had tickets for The Primitives at Exeter Uni. I was a pretty big fan with all the signed vinyl and random stuff than you don't get with MP3. I was supposed to get a lift from a lad I worked with on Saturdays, for some reason the git stood me up and I never got to go. I still get a tinge of regret when I hear 'Crash' played on the radio.  :'(

I missed about four hours of bands at Donnington in 1995 'cause after having driven there I proceeded to neck a bottle of Southern Comfort in an hour and then have a complete blank for four hours until my body had (started) to recover.  The only thing I remember from those four hours was dancing to White Zombie with some guy who had his nipple pierced (probably influenced why I've had mine pierced!!!).  Have no recollection of Machine Head though.  Fortunately I didn't miss seeing Slayer, Therapy? or Metallica

Gosh, you mean there are people who HAVEN'T seen Primus live? Unbelievable.

Also ticked Bolt Thrower.

Errr biggest misses have probably been an excellent sounding Rezerection with Original Gabber / Technohead/GTO / Technosis and many more. Also missing seeing Biosphere in London when I was already down for a dark ambient gig the next day. Would have also liked to see Pantera and Carcass in their prime.

haha, I did similar in 1984.  Missed all the early bands including Gary Moore, who I really wanted to see.  Vaguely came round for Ozzy but was fully sobered up by the time AC/DC played.  They were worth it alone fortunately.

Also, had tickets for Thin Lizzy in about 1980 and SLF in 1983 but there were no trains running on the dates so I couldn't make them :(

Although they profess to be on a hiatus, I think Fugazi will do one last tour at some point. I regret missing the one solid opportunity I had to see Fugazi at the Cockpit, Leeds in 2002 (03?). Had to go to some non entities shit student birthday bar crawl and couldn't get out of it despite trying. Where and who is he now? I don't know.

I'm sure we've had this topic before :)

Aphex Twin (I've watched RDJ DJ a few times, but I mean a proper Aphex set)
I've seen him live. He fired up his laptop, then sat back, lit up a fat cigar and surveyed the crowd with a strange glint in his eye. Does he ever do live in the sense of the word?

- Old Skool Specials
- Clash
- Agree on Waters Pink Floyd
- Led Zeppelin
- Hendrix (preferably at Woodstock dosed up to my eyeballs on strong acid)
- Cheryl Cole (got to be the greatest of all time)

Physically impossible, as I wasn't even a glint in my father's eye at that stage, but I wouls love to have seen Thin Lizzy around the time Live And Dangerous was recorded. Phenomenal record from the best band Ireland has ever produced (That was a subtle way of saying U2 are a steaming pile. This is not a subtle way).

Seen Pantera a couple of times, the last being the Trendkill tour.  Awesome live, except for that last gig when Philip appeared to be off his head on whatever he'd got his hands on- one of the worst gigs ever.

I was there in '94, too young to drink so I caught the entire show, apart from the last bit of AD/DC's set. Van Halen were awesome, didn't remember Gary Moore being on, saw Moore at the Apollo Manchester about the same time - Phil Lynott came on for Out In The Fields.
Must have been one of his last ever gigs  :(

Gutted to miss Elliot Smith at Glasto one year, as he was soon to be dead. Bunked off during my uni finals to see Soundgarden, so couldn't justify going to see one of Nirvana's first UK gigs as well. Next time they toured it had all got too big and mainstream, and that was that.

But I did go to a Spiral Tribe rave, when they took over part of the Brixton Academy during a Hawkwind allnighter  :)

Original G n R line up

I saw them on their first UK tour at Mcr Apollo, they were excellent but there were hints of Axel weirdness even then; he had on a pair of tight blue leather pants on which he'd written 'Glam Sucks'.
Faster Pussycat were supporting, and to be fair they did suck.

Would like to have seen some of Bowie's shows back in the 70s, early Roxy Music and Pink Floyd (with Waters.)

Did see the proper ACDC lineup (with the late Bon Scott) here in Melbourne back in the late 70s...twice!  8)

They haven't turned in the Eagles!

They've turned into Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers. The new song is a ridiculous ripoff.

Foo Fighters before they turned into The Eagles

They haven't turned in the Eagles!

They've turned into Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers. The new song is a ridiculous ripoff.

Agreed, I thought it sounded like 'Learning To Fly'.

Yup, uncannily similar. First they nick the song title (sort of), then the entire song.

I have actually seen them but god how I wish I'd been at the Wilco gig in London last week. Best (live) band on the planet at the moment?
