Porthcawl
October 01, 2019, 09:05:21 am

Will have a few hours to kill in Porthcawl this coming weekend.  Seems there is a bit of bouldering/soloing on the front there.

Any beta, is it any good.  Worth taking a pad?

I quite like the place, need to be a low tide and calm seas, but you can still get stuff done any time. Landings are on platforms, a decent pad is probably a good idea. More suited to an an easy soloing / microroutes session than getting some harder things done.

It's a pleasant spot, but I seem to recall from going surfing there that the parking by the beach was pretty pricey.

The Trench at Ogmore has some harder stuff, but is more conditions dependant, and a 20 min or so drive.

Nice one, sounds spot on - i.e. bit of easy soloing around.

Anyone got a guide - UKC seems to suggest Gower and SE Wales 2004, which sounds a bit old.

Looks like the kind of place that a guide would be pretty useless and you can just climb where ever looks good ish.

Seen the stuff on the South west bouldering blog.

Pretty much. My Gower and SE Wales Guide predates that even!

I thought there might be some videos on youtube or something, but not much comes up.

I recall just following my nose and climbing what looked interesting. Pretty spot with a chilled atmosphere. There is apparent some stuff closer to town too, but I never really looked for it.
