sadly my old mavic 521's have properly died so can anyone recommend me some decent sub £200 disk compatible mtb wheels? not too bothered about getting the best wheels going just want some reasonably tough xc wheels for blasting round the local moors.

There was something about Superstar wheelsets in Dirt. Think it said they were decent, and importantly good value cos they only sell direct. Can't comment on them otherwise but might be worth exploring...

Hope Hoops - Hope Pro2 and DT Swiss 5.1 - dunno if you'd get a pair for less that £200, but they've been bloody good so far.  Rear is quite noisy, so not exactly a stealth wheel if creeping up on small children is your thing...

I have had bad experiences with Superstar parts - particulary brake pads.  They appear to be made of a combination of chewing gum, tin foil and held together with, well nothing really.  The pads fell off the backing plate on three different sets.  The one's that stayed together were rubbish.

Hope Hoops come strongly recommended, get the 4.2 rims if you don't ride too hard or the 5.1's for better tyre control but more weight.  Just be careful with your tyre levers, DT rims are very soft compared to, say, Mavic.

Not many people in the wide world of the interweb have much good to say about Superstars I'm afraid.

Basic Shimano wheels will be pretty reasonable if you can't strech to Hope.

Norton recommended the Hopes to me and they are the puppy's though they come in at £270, but come on these bike budgets are always flexible

I had similar superstar issues with 4 sets of xt pads debonding. After my mate promsing they'd changed, I bought some for the alps this year and didnt have any issues.
I also got a set of their pedals 3 months ago which also went to the alps and are still going strong with all the pins.

Saying that the Dt Swiss 5.1's on Pro2's are amazing.
