Places to take the girlfriend
October 01, 2009, 11:11:36 pm
My beau wants to go bouldering but doesn't want to go to the wall (there's too many people to see her there apparently!). Any suggestions for venues around Leeds to go to. Criteria are:

A lot of very easy problems
Decent landings
Accessible on public transport from Leeds
Not too high

I was thinking Woodhouse Scar or Shipley Glen might be the best choices but have never been to either so am not sure. I can see lots of easy problems in the guide but not sure if it might be too high. Just to be really unhelpful I have no idea how high "too high" might be. We'll see how big her balls are

Woodhouse Scar would be perfect  if she's from the greek school of blocage. I can only guess the people of Halifax smash a bottle of becks for luck with each successful ascent. If she is greek she may often request bum-love to maintain her virginity for marriage. I imagine.

Caley Playground area would seem to fit the bill perfectly, as Jim said.

Shipley Glen would be pretty good too, go to the probs under the car parking area, all low with flat landings, a lot of it break to break stuff. I think you need to walk up from Shipley though, although I have heard of people using the kiddies miniature train to get to the boulders. There is an OK pub at the far end or you could walk up the canal to Saltaire to the shopping bit and some nice caffs/pubs.

I would imagine getting to woodhouse and shipley on public transport to be a proper pain in the arse

I have to say I'm liking the idea of Shipley. I think I'd be bored off my tits at Caley playground. Cheers for the advice though.

Go to the crag boulders - loads of suitable stuff there, esp. downhill of the track. And there's the woods nearby....... :shag:

I'd go to Almscliff. Remember if its her first time she'd likely to do 3 or 4 probs before getting tired/ bored, and its a nicer place to hang out at than most. Plus topping out on the boulders will be more exciting than shipley. Make sure its not baltic mind.

Don't take her to Almscliff, it's not very good for weak crap girls, I don't think.   :'(  Unless I was just given a duff introduction.

PS. I saw your lady on Facebook, she's a hottie, I didn't want to say on there in case she wondered who the weird girl perving on her was.  :-*

Will, surely now you are employed you should get a set of wheels? Driving your lass to the crag is a lot cooler than taking the bus.

do you want her to enjoy bouldering or do you want to put her off/have a good climbing day for yourself?

caley playground is the best bet (you can always go to different part of the crag when she gets tired)

i think loads of the easy stuff at shipley is pretty high (YMC wall/glen arete etc nice brit 4cs but too high/bad landings for beginner)

get the bus to caley - bit of a trek from saltaire station to the glen (Almsclif even worse from public transport)

if you do go to shipley the little wall with a tree growing out of it near YMC wall area is ok (but i can't think of much else for a beginner)

its often much easier to do routes with a beginner than bouldering.

the word you were looking for was belle not beau.

Ahh, but perhaps Will's getting  bonus points for being "green" and using public transport  :devangel:

Don't be a tard, you must have projects at Roadside, all of which will be less than 5 mins walk from the playground.

When Will started to talk about his beau as "her" I thought he had managed to pull with a proper ladyboy who fancied a go at climbing (understandably a bit shy at having people watch him/her) which I thought was very cool indeed (oral jackpot, I'm told).
I am a little disappointed to discover that he has a normal female girlfriend.

do you want her to enjoy bouldering or do you want to put her off/have a good climbing day for yourself?
this is an important thing to sort out before you go.

The other important thing to consider is how much you want/need to impress her. Visiting a venue where you can glide over all the problems like a randy tiger will impress her more than watching you fail on your projects.

Can't believe people aren't writing really lewd replies to this thread title. What the hell has happened to UKB?   ;)

I can't from work, she's very pretty though.

Up the arse just seemed too lazy a reply, Cofe.
