Don't sweat it, FD, all contributions are very welcome (well, almost).
The problem with injuries/ the net, is that there's no generic answer to a question.  Thus most things I say are a tad vague (sorry), but hopefully in a guiding manner.

I agree... I didn't think that I could get a 'second opinion' on here or indeed specific advice. I was just interested in people's thoughts / experiences. Also, from a practical viewpoint, it's difficult in London to get a doctor / physio / etc. who knows about climbing.

This thread has been helpful. Thanks everyone.

I'm going to get a second opinion about the surgery and in the meantime I'm going to start physio again. It might be all that I need.
