ethernet question
July 29, 2009, 11:03:20 am
we're moving the office around and all the tech heads are away. we've got one spot where there's a single ethernet cable but we need two cables - they won't be used at the same time but will be one into a mac and one a pc, the former for working on 99% of the time, the latter used to test new websites etc. a switch flicking between them when needed.

would something like this allow us to split this so there's a line into each machine, or is it more complicated?

ta.

Yep, that looks like it'll do the job.

You could just ditch the PC, install bootcamp and have the Mac as dual boot, or even bung some cheap wireless network cards in, and get a wireless network up and running (if you don't already).

You guys must have loads of dosh of the back of Revelations and all the cycling and walking guides.

That would do it, however it's a bit of a clunky solution. It would probably be fine but you may experience the odd IP conflict or slow connection whilst your switch learns whats been changed. A better solution is get a pair of these http://www.ebuyer.com/product/34965 Put one in the port and one in the patch panel (in your server room/cabinet) and assuming you have a spare switch port and a patch lead you'll effectively have two separate ethernet cables. Cat5e cables only use half of their 8 wires, so you can use it for two connections with no difference in speed.

(This has been discussed before but I couldn't find it)
