What's Dalriada settled to? A quick google gives me anything from E6 6b to E8 6c, or 'F7b+ with pegs and gear'... I presume from the - totally amazing - line that it doesn't suffer from seepage and thus any pegs might still be in ok condition? Any knowledge appreciated.

E7 according to 5th and 6th ascents. I think it's to do with state of fixed gear.

You are really gonna need a car. And be prepared to to some walk-ins.

Mike Tweedy on Dalriada

Not quite as good as Cubby's pic of Dave Mac on it, but still good.

This looks amazing, still awaits an OS too......and at the grades quoted (F7b+ with pegs and gear)....

Sounds like Niall McNair got close and did it in good style though....

Stephen Richardson - 11/08/2003

On Sunday 10th August Niall McNair made the third ascent of Dalriada on the North Peak of the Cobbler. After putting in a gallant effort on the Saturday Niall took a whipper just after the start of the main overhang on his onsight attempt. The famous Cobbler smeg proved all too much for the sloper pod. Not to be defeated by anything Niall bivied up in the Cobbler and waited for myself, Stephen Richardson, to come up from Glasgow on the Sunday morning. Niall spent the night making polite conversation with the local sheep and getting fired into his Whyte and MacKay.

After I lead Club Crack for a warm up Niall decided to jump on the route straight away, before the sun hit the Dalriada wall. After making quick work of the initial technical steep wall Niall found himself at the no hands rest just before the main overhang. From his whipper the day before Niall just decided to go for it, as he knew the gear was good. He speedily climbed past his high point from the day before and reached the first jug on the ridiculously overhanging wall. After a quick "This is F****** steep" he made progress through the wall. Whilst hanging on the wall getting steadily pumped Niall decided to take some time out and look about, as you do! Spotting some climbers on the famous Punsters Crack (Severe), he thought he would shout across some beta for them. Realising that he was still hanging on the steepest section of rock he quickly made it up to the second no hands rest, which involves crouching down on one leg looking past your feet straight down to Loch Long below. After a rest and some problem solving Niall cruised it across the headwall and to the comfort of the belay around 10am. His successful ascent resulted in couple of more whisky shots, just to keep him going.

Niall suggests a grade of E7 6b for an onsight attempt using the pegs available. One of the most impressive displays of a highly fit traditional climber I have ever witnessed.

Well done Niall.

And most significantly... it looks clean! The problem with most mountain crags routes above E2 is they're filthy...  :(

I think cobbler stays reasonably clean as it takes very little drainage and hasn't got much vegetation. As a bit of triv, it's one of the few munros in scotland that has obligatory technical climbing to reach the top.

I thought in In Pinn was the only one with that claim to fame?

Your mate needs some brighter clothing. He is almost lined up on the horizon to be perfectly camo'ed twixt sky and rock.

Nice pics though.

Yeah, slightly annoyingly as he had a red/burgundy t-shirt on underneath that would have contrasted a lot better, but he felt it was too cold.

Oops I slipped!

Friend Tim taking a fall from The Sloth last night.  Inverted due to ropes being round his legs so lowered down, grabbed a helmet then cruised through the roof second try (ignoring any jams this time and pulling on the holds instead!).  He was understandably pissed off at having slipped off, I believe his exact words were "BOLLOCKS!!!"

Friend snapped these shots with my camera as I was belaying, not half bad at all.

Well it was rather hot and sweaty last night and jamming just wasn't happening, as I found out struggling not to slide out of Saul's Crack, and hence this shot!  Having slipped out of the jams he went for the obvious solution.
