I've never quite understood how/why Australians call the English "Pommies".

I was told the aetiology of the word is from the acronym POM which stands for Prisoner Of his/her Majesty when I was living in Perth, which surely was the ancestors of the present day Australians, so really it is the Australians who are POM's.  Unless of course its some sort of jibe at the fact that the English are still stuck under rule (but again that doesn't make sense as until recently(-ish) Australia was part of the Commonwealth).

Scrap that Wikipedia has an alternative explanation my curiosity has been satiated (for the time being!).
