  • Getting fatter, not fitter.
Whenever I have spoken to someone who has been in a car with JD then they always spontaneously come out with a story about it. One has told me that he thinks if he hadn't been a world class climber he would certainly have been a world class driver due to the insane amount of recklessness he has while flying four sheets to the wind  at high speeds.

I'll post this one for Fatdoc (sorry dude, but the pic is too good to waste) :)

The 'doc badly injured at Wincobank BMX track - he landed on his bike; one end of the handlebar was on the ground, the other was in his armpit thus puncturing a major blood vessel. Had he been on his own in Wharncliffe then carking may well have been on the cards, but luckily he lived to injure himself badly on a bike another day :)

well...

due to the response from my teenage activities i was saving that one.... best bit was Bubba phoning FBSF whilst he was on a hanging belay in pembroke.. " he's done it again"...!!!

if it were not for a mate of mine (another Dr) at the scene i would have indeed bled to death....

the pain of someone fisting your armpit (with dirt laden gloves) and I mean.. IN your armpit down to the bone to get the artery to spasm and thus stop bleeding is more pain than all my other injuries put together (broken back, ribs and god knows what else - it all becomes a blur after a while).. I vomited... a lot.

I bought my Dr mate a set of bespoke DH pedals and DH five ten shoes to say thanks...

when he stubbled in home.. after having mobilised a trauma team to meet me at the A&E... his wife screamed:

"my GOD, what have you done!!"

he replied

"dont worry it's not my blood...."

- bigger scream -

"then who's is it then???!!"

I was back at work in 5 days.

rumor in work was I was in ITU, near dead...

got few funny looks at work that day I can tell you ::)

Just feel the need for a cheesy quote here:

- Point break - [ ace film of uber cheese ] *it's not a tragedy to die doing what you love*

ahem....

sadly, the closest i've been to crossing the line has been at a friend's wedding party. after a youth spent partying, i had already chose a healthier style of life at the time, so couldn't bear much alcohol anymore, but at that party i just drank and drank and drank. i was happy and immortal.
so the last thing i can remember is that i was leading a congo line, no shirt, only pants and suspenders, bottle of whisky in my right hand.
my next memory is of (luckily) coming back to life at dawn, under a heavy rain, seminaked in the wood behind the villa. i was covered in vomit and with bites of the most horrendous insects all over my body.
happy to be alive i miraculously found my jacket, then tried to find some other zombie to take me home. i found all the guys from the catering service that were close to leaving, so i asked them a lift to home (30 miles...). one of them saw me and said "what the fuck have you drunk?"
i got home, took a box of aspirine and went to bed, my g/f was a to work. she came back, furious, at 730 pm, when i woke up only to be challenged by her.
turns out i had disappeared at some time, they had searched for me but to no avail. all my friends were absoultely pissed with me because all their girlfriends were pissed with me and kept telling them "you are all the same!!" then i got some bad fever, couldn't go to work for several days, and my girlfriend left me because i had (in her exact words) "flirted with every girl in the party in front of her."
obviously i had to throw in the thrash a brand new suit, my shoes and socks and lost my new tailor made shirt. that was a fucking party anyway.

A few of us on here seem to have had experiences that open the mind to new views, whether that be near-death or seeing a close friend die and having to deal with the immediate consequences.  Thus, emotions are high- this thread has stirred up emotions I wished it hadn't, but then again it's oddly comforting to know others have been throught the same shit.

FatDoc, I can understand your reaction but I really don't think Will was being a dick.  I suspect (correct me if I'm wrong here Will) that he hasn't seen his friend take a fatal ground fall, and so doesn't get choked up reading this thread like some of us do.

My very good friend Johno. I like it when he points the camera at himself while still in shock. What a pro.
