ipod microphone/recorder
January 21, 2010, 01:10:13 pm
does anyone have one of these? I've had a brief look at the web and only seem to have found ones that run off the internal battery thus burning the ipod out in an hour. anyone have any advice on one that doesn't have an internal battery,  (thus not raping ipod battery) and that works well. cheers

Word from friends tech-savvy on recording issues suggests ipods are not a great choice for this.

What are you using it for? What kind of quality do you need?

basically if i go to conferences/educational meetings where there are multiple lectures in a day, i'd like to be able to record what the speakers say. i don't reckon my phone will record that long beast.

just buy a proper dictaphone.
I presume you'll be getting their permission first. I remember one lecturer getting very arsey with a student who had one out. Propably the only lecture I went to as well

'a student'? You weren't trying to record the entire course onto a laptop whilst snoozing at the back were you Jim? We've been here before. Thank god for the internet eh.

Get them to email their written notes to you?

I'm one lazy muthafucker when it comes to paperwork, but even I offer to provide my audiences/victims with written summaries of what I burble on about.

This also gives me an opportunity to include crap jokes that I didn't feel were suitable during my live performance.

I've got an iAudio X5L that I've used to record some conversations on and it worked rather well.  Its a bit bulky though as it uses a hard-drive (got it four years ago though!).

Got my wife a new mp3 player a while back and plumped for the iAudio i7 which is tiny in comparison has 16Gb flash memory (significantly lighter) and also has recording functionality.  Again tried using it to record lectures, but battery lasts ages.

Saltbeef,
A colleagues girlfriend needed to record interviews for her research and was not going to be able to download them for ages - she ended up getting a small MP3 player with 512mb memory (not much nowadays) and a record function for £20 that did the job fine..
2 secs googling found this one (in attractive pink with a dinosaur motif to boot) for £20... there'll be loads out there. Bet you could get one for a tenner...
T

edit - this baby is even cheaper £13

PS- ask the lecturer/presenter if you can record as some of my colleagues get a bit shirty about this (god knows why.. probably incase they swear or something..)
