helsby -- time regained
May 19, 2009, 12:25:25 pm
I enjoyed the article about Cheshire Sandstone in the latest issue of "Climb". Well, I would, wouldn't I? Anyway, I was particularly interested in the photo of Time Regained at Helsby. Back in the mists of time (gets pipe and slippers, buttons cardigan...), I recall a big, boisterous team of steely fingered sandstone addicts (plus one imported ringer, who later went on to make a quite a name for himself on the global climbing scene) having a play on this line on a top rope. Nothing surprising there, I agree. Thing is, back then the right-hand hold visible in the photo was not there! When/ how did it arrive? I think we should be told!
Nice writing by the way.

Thanks Tim. I believe the hold is the result of a flake snapping. It was there when I first started climbing at Helsby in 1998 (by which time the line had been done on top rope). The route would be extremely difficult without the hold but I'm sure there's nothing dodgy about it.

Sounds convincing! I'll be marooned on Murkeyside the last weekend in May, and keen for some sandstone action. Thought I might go and have a play on Monoblock for a while...and obviously check out the Breck, too.

I'd be keen for someone to join me on a Haston Dyno mission if the weather ever improves, the more pads the merrier!

Come off it Tom. We all know that wasn't the real Haston Dyno.

Didn't it used to be called "Dog on a String"?

That's the one. I took the liberty of renaming it when I led it.

Yeah, I thought about renaming The Brush Off when I soloed it, too.  ;)
