US. I think additional charges for roaming would apply regardless of Brexit.

Soz Chris - for some reason only read the post above yours.

I believe the latest version of google maps lets to download or cache loads of data (all the maps you need etc..) but of course you wont get the live traffic stuff etc.. If you are on 3 they have free roaming in the US...

You can always test it out here - load up a load then switch off the data?

I did just that. downloaded the UK map, and then navigated to work using Navmii and phone in airplane mode, worked fine.

Will see if herewego works better on the way home.

Uses a lot of space on the phone though, will need to uninstall UK before I install Florida!

Anyone got experience of using a decent phone for navigation in the US without data / 3G.

Some apps say you can download offline maps, but how reliable are they? Hiring a satnav for 2 weeks seems expensive. Will have wifi access every evening.

Navmii or Herewego get recommended.

I did this for my 6 month tour without issue and on a recent ski trip, my copy of Navmii far exceeded the capability of the smartphone based SatNav my Uncle mistakenly hired with the car.

I just had to stop at the golden arches at various points to download new states (mainly when driving from Ca to BC).

Great, Thanks Paul. We'll only be in one state, and have wifi access every evening so should be fine.

Results are in;  Both performed adequately, by Navmii seemed to have better screen info etc, and updated continuously and while herewego occasionally stalled and jumped.
