Honest opinion - is Portlethen worth the drive, or should I just go to Dumbarton / County?

Definitely worth the drive if you live in the North West of Scotland.

Drive from where? I occasionally make the drive from my house 5 miles away. I think it's OK. Rock quality is generally good, and some nice lines and a good spread of grades, but probs are often pretty short, some stuff is tidal, and can suffer with damp / grease.

Depending where you are travelling from, I would choose a few venues in the County, Glen Nevis, Torridon Dumby (if you like the place) or even Glen Clova (esp. if you are keen to explore new prob potential) over Portlethen. But this is my opinion, some people really like the place.

If you do a site search on here, the place has been discussed a few times.

Portlethen is good if you live in Aberdeenshire. I'd be disappointed if I'd driven for any more than an hour to get there... (just my opinion mind)

Driving from Dunblane, so probably 1 1/2. I can get to Kyloe / bowden in the same timeframe......

Go to Wolfcrag...........

Tongue firmly in cheek of course.

My vote would be Dumbarton, about 1 hour or so from Dunblane or Kyloe but that would be closer to 2 hours to get to. I have never been to Portlethen even though I have been travelling to Aberdeen for the last 7 years to go offshore and I probably will never go especially as my offshore career may have ended.

If you head to Portl you've also got Cammachmore close by, which is good.
If you've spent a lot of time in the County it's be a welcome change, and a very different style.  The setting is cool, especially if you're lucky enough to see some seals or whatnot.
