Making a call tomorrow morning would be ideal but the usual more sheltered options would include: Rivelin / Quarries, Gardoms South, Froggatt in the woods, Burbage West, Secret Garden, Amber Valley, Black Rocks, Shining Cliff, Rowtor, Cratcliffe, bits of Stanton etc.

It’s the wind/drying paradox.

Somewhere windy enough to dry fast but not THAT windy...

Interesting you think Sunday is better TT. On my app (BBC Weather) it looks like quite heavy rain overnight Saturday and not much wind sunday. Thanks Fiend, that gives me something to start with.

Temp spike on sat means grit will surely be rubbish then?

It’s a really tricky one to call - all to do with a front passing through on sat afternoon/night. If the position/timing is out by 2-3 hours that can make all the difference with sat or sun being wet/dry. At the moment it looks like Sat AM and Sun PM are dry... but may well shift. It’s interesting that different weather apps use different short range forecasts...

I’ve been having negotiations with MrsTT about when I could have off over the weekend and I’ve gone for a quick session this afternoon with maybe a quick hit on sun... devil you know etc...  today looks good apart from not much wind...

It doesn't look significant enough to be a problem, especially with the wind and the rock not having been rained on for a while. Humidity forecast is decent (for this time of year).
I'm going to opt for Sat rather than Sunday based on the current forecast. Picking southern/eastern crags would hedge against the rain coming in earlier than predicted.

Going up to Birchen this evening as tonight actually looks like the best conditions. I will be out tomorrow too, so will try to remember to post back what it's like.

Anyone know if Secret Garden is dry at the moment, got some unfinished business with LHMD which needs sorting out.

On my app (BBC Weather)

I'd backup that with something else, the model seems to be quite pesimistic or maybe has quite a margin for error built in.
To me, MetOffice seems to try predicting more accurately, while it might not always be right on timings it gets duration about right and also seems more accurate for local phenomona like fog, mist and drizzle.

All this chat of connies and not a peep from the Caller. Bonjoy looks like he's manoeuvring into position to take up the crown should JB be caught asleep at the wheel.

Of more immediate concern is a new Lime caller as Haydn has abandoned his post and fucked off abroad for 6 months.

Going to take a punt on Gardoms tomorrow unless anyone has been around that way and knows it's fucked etc. Someone ticked something on ukc today so that's a good start...

When you lot stop farting around well out of season, then you might be trusted to pick a new Lime Caller  :chair:

Half of my favourite grit crags don’t come into condition until mid-March. Not sure how an 8 month grit season would go down with the limestone faithful.

Who'd have thought it, the lime calling shambles continues! It's almost as if having no sense of quality correlates with an unreliable character.

Mindful of the deteriorating weekend forecast, I snuck in a Burbage West circuit yesterday. Happy to put it in writing that, in the event of my untimely demise, Jonboy should be next in line.

Attack the best form of defence? Has the pressure of the job got to you? Where’s the value in having a steadfast caller if the call is wrong!

A good grit call would have been no call so far whereas Haydn got the spring Lime call spot on and that’s the sole requirement in the job description. Job well done.

When settling down in your pipe and slippers this evening with the Hansard book of ethics perhaps you can reflect on the value of youth and new blood.

No way! Even with my limited opportunities I’ve had a couple of grit sessions in excellent conditions (and a few more in suboptimal conditions). There have already been several periods of low humidity Easterlies and Northerlies, unfortunately none of these have hung around for long (and most have been midweek).

😂 name em Tim 😃

Sharks over-reacting about the non call - but I can think of one 4-5 day period of settled weather and the rest have been the odd day or two. 💩💩💩

It’s normally drier after Xmas though so here’s hoping.

I was wondering about some sort of ratio of lime vs grit problems carried out (from ukc logbook data) to see if there is some switch over (or point in the ratio) that corresponds to weather/calling etc...

If the criteria for it still being lime season are “damp weather on the Eastern Edges but the first three holds of Ben’s Roof are dry” then surely there’s no need for either caller.

Went to shit at Gardoms very quickly. Frustrating in the extreme...
