45 foot? The break at Chee tor has shrunk a bit.
..and it would be an impressive lob that landed you in the river.

It was 50ft according to the BBC

Clocked this on t'other site...

Quote from: Serpico
He's a friend of mine, I don't know the details of the accident but I do know that he's got some crushed vertebrae and will have to spend the next 4wks on his back.
I won't reveal his identity but he's a very experienced climber with a lot of E7 onsights to his name.

Whoever it is I hope they've got a decent amount of morphine and recover soon.

Its pete Hurley.

He doesnt sound well. Its not clear whether they will operate or try to see if it fixes itself at this stage. I heard six weeks rather than 4.

Climbing an E2 when a hold broke.

Bad luck Pete. Bloody limestone eh. Hope he recovers okay.

Rescue sounds like a right old mission. The dales can tend to give the impression of being more relaxed and amenable than many cliff settings, this difficulty with rescue access shows it's not quite like that.

Op today, he crushed a vertebrae. He has feeling in his feet. In the NG for a few weeks at least.

If your reading this Pete, all the best mate, get well soon.

As mentioned he had an op this morning which will hopefully reduce the amount of time he'll have to spend in bed. I went to visit him yesterday and he was in good spirits considering he's in pain and looking at 4-6wks on his back. Because of the op this morning his sister Vicki said to wait until tomorrow or the day after before visiting. For those who want to visit after that he's in ward 5 of the Huntsman building the Northern General.

I think Nic Sellars is still on that ward - so he will at least have a friendly face. Glad the Op went ok & he is on the way to recovery - sounds crap back luck... will try to find some time to say hello - only down the way at work.

- there are some lush fillies on that ward of a day too!

A mate was there last year and they did a good job on his fractured t12 with I think a bit of tungsten and some pelvis.

Note to self, never find out how good they are.

If he fell off the top of Chee Tor and only crushed a vertebrae I'd say he's pretty bloody lucky!

I wish him all the best for a speedy recovery, and I hope that his friends and family are OK too.

I suspect his belayer's probably pretty shook up by the whole business as well. From a similar experience (but a much more minor fracture) I came out fine, but the people I landed at the feet of nearly gave up climbing! If anyone knows the belayer, can you give them a manly hug and some appropriate reassurance please?

Went to visit Horizontal Hurley again today and the good news is he's been walking around - a full 20m (roughly the same distance he fell).
Be aware if you're thinking of visiting that he's been moved from The Huntsman building to Ward 2 in the Osbourne building.
