the best pic from last night's barbel session*

*the session had many things in common with fishing for barbel, but no barbel were actually caught - I lost one that was probably around 3lb

nope, I was trying to frame the rod tips against the storm for a quality fishing pic

the storm kept it's distance - Thor is respectful of Lagers' power

I reckon any self-respecting bolt would choose a chunky cherry picker over Lager's skinny wand anyday. Whereabouts Lagers? Keen to get back on the Barbel scene...

You were fly-fishing at WMD to get that roach?

top end of Salmon Pastures - seen some big shapes under the ranunculus whilst fluff chucking, so thought I'd investigate further

yeah, roach was on fly - tenkara style (hipster fly fishing - like commuting on a fixie) - not that taken with still water tenkara to be honest

I was on the Trent on Friday night, the storm hit me about 2am and didn't stop until 5am. It was pretty terrifying when it was directly over me, all I had was a brolly for shelter.

I managed to catch 3 barbel and a 7lb 8oz bream!, I also lost 2 good fish, I think one was a carp. I didn't get a pic of one of the barbel because of the weather. Still no doubles, but I did match my PB with one at 9lb.

Nice one Will!

1. I sent out a group email the other week about the match and only Ian got back to me. Did no one else get this?
2. I am unexpectedly free this Saturday with car and a desire to fish. Anyone free to hook up and fling some fluff?

Cheers...

Oh and to keep this on topic, here's a mate of mine with a fat 'Bow from that trout brothel Raygill Lakes!

I got it but didn't really have anything to add beyond what I put on the thread. Keen if others are.

What is the drink at the beginning, coffee, bourbon and coors?  I thought fishermen just drank special brew?

Yes! Get in!

I've only ever had small Barbel from the Don, getting a double out of the Don would be a great achievement!

What stretch are you fishing?

top end of Salmon Pastures

I would have fished longer, but was getting pissed off with all the rats

I was headed for the bit just upstream from the Stevenson Road bridge, but changed my mind at the last minute

Rob- Is this free fishing. Would love to get down there and as i am down in sheff during the week would be perfect for a few hours on an evening.

What did you catch them on? Could you get them on the float rather than the feeder/lead?

It's all free from what I can gather, as long as you can gain access. We used to fish attercliffe where you can get on easily from the five weirs walk. When I worked near the foundry there were always doubles under the bridge by tesco metro...

I'd be keen too.

yeah, free fishing

where that pic was taken would be great for trotting a float - the main channel (3 ft deep ?) is just over a rod length out and would give you a long trot

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/River+Don/@53.3885924,-1.4467667,21z/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x487bd61427e7b039:0x9f47afb4f4ea351e

park on Warren Street and follow the five wiers footpath (shows as a cycle route on google maps) - you'll recognise the portacabin in the background of my whiskers pic

I was fishing 12mm pellets to avoid the little grayling

Brilliant. I am away on holiday until August but will bring down my kit when i am back. Never really use my float rod up home so can leave it here.

If you fancy being guide we should meet up.

Do you need waders?

I'm back mid August - give me a shout if you want to meet up

no need for waders

another good float fishing spot is the bottom of the first weir downstream from The Wicker arches

park here (after no parking time has ended) and climb down the wall to the spot where the ground is highest (4b reverse mantle)

yeah, free fishing

Free river fishing - unheard of round here. I realise it's not exactly the Balmoral estate, but still nice to be able to do.
