Having tried that 500mm, there was no going back, so I picked a mk1 version up second hand last week - since when there seems to have been a dearth of wildlife of any sort near me. However, I did happen to be going up the M40, so it seemed rude not to stop and try and photograph some Kites. Amazing birds, and pretty damned big too.

I'm really for some decent shots with it in the future, its a fantastic lens, albeit a bit of a beast at nearly 4kg.

That reminds me, I saw a red kite in Chew a couple of months back when I was at Upperwood quarry. It was shot as it passed over the farm below, in broad daylight, with traffic on the A road. Clearly they don't feel they need to worry about the law. Reporting it to the police was an interesting process - they clearly don't have the resources to even answer calls about stuff like this, after seventy five minutes listening to their phone ring I gave up and went through the rspb. Report here: https://www.rspb.org.uk/our-work/rspb-news/news/stories/shot-red-kite-like-balloon-bursting/

Trip to Parkgate on Sunday afternoon saw Marsh Harriers aplenty and brilliant views of a female Merlin hunting - proper exciting!! Was very surprised to see 4 or 5 House Martins still hanging around...

Saw a pair of choughs whilst doing some bouldering in Borth on weds. It's not the first time I have seen them there, and it's always a delight.

Cool! I had a few days on the Llyn recently and saw loads, more than I can ever remember seeing pretty much! Great characterful birds :)

Couple of rubbish distant views...

While out for a walk yesterday, my 1-year-and-4-month old pointed at some blackbirds and pronounced: "Birdy". She then waved at said blackbirds. A future contributor to this thread, I feel.

Saw a pair of Corsican Nuthatches while walking a section of the Tra Mare e Monti between Bonifatu and Tuarelli when I was in Corscia in September. Endemic to Corsica and only ~2000 pairs, so pleased to be able to see them.

Snail Kite
Limpkin
Greater Blue Heron
Anhinga
Bald Eagle
Turkey Vulture

plus loads of waders common in UK.

And a baby alligator!

Anyone going on holiday to Florida, you should go on an airboat ride, great fun!

Florida

Phew, for a minute there I thought climate change had hit the Ythan estuary hard!

As an aside if I lived in Florida I'd be seriously concerned about climate change. make Norfolk look hilly.

I'm pretty sure two ravens are visiting my garden in Netheredge.  They seem far too big to be crows.  I need to pay attention to their tail feathers next time I presume.  Any thoughts?

I found this last time I was confused on the differences. Size is the major defining difference for Ravens but beak feathers, tail and wings also pointers.

And call - a deep, guttural "cronk" from ravens compared to the more familiar "caw" from crows.

Thanks - I'll have a good look at them if they make an appearance again. They've been around for a week.  Certainly look like ravens from the video.  I was just startled by their size.

I think ravens are pretty unlikely in Nether edge tbh, althoughcrows do look big close up, ravens look huge. I think a lot of folk confuse jackdaws for crows, which are much smaller. Not always easy to tell though, there's a corvid researcher on twitter who runs a weekly 'crow or no' photo challenge.

After a pretty lean few weeks I got to firsts for me - a Water Rail and a Bittern, along with a couple nice early morning deer shots.

Beautiful Barn owl hunting in the field just below the North end of Millstone.

Spent a magical 5 minutes watching it quarter the ground, diving a couple of times, whist catching the evening sunlight, with the glorious autumnal back drop of millstone and plantation.

My young lad was super stoked.  Just wish I'd had Tims camera with me!!

(got a couple of crap phone pics, not worthy of posting here).

Thanks.  Yes I think it's unlikely. I'll try and get a photo if there's a next time.

Our neighbourhood is full of deer but the last couple of days two rather magnificent antlered stags have been virtually living in the backyard. Seeing them never gets old. There are also birds of prey everywhere but last week I got a particularly good view of red-tailed hawk perched perhaps 30 feet away, and then just the other day we came home to turkey vulture in the yard, a new one on me (black vultures are two a penny).

Sounds amazing Andy!

In the grand scheme of thigs, this is not a great shot, and cropped to within an inch of it's life! However, it's such a cool bird, probably my favourite and the views we had were spectacular! Spent about 15 minutes with the family watching it hunt over the moor between Birchen and Gardoms :)

Also saw a Green Woodpecker which was nice...

Nice.

There was a Barn Owl and a Short Eared Owl hunting that area for a lot of the late summer/autumn. The Barn Owl was raising chicks in a nearby farm. I even got a shot with them both in, but they were miles away at the time.

There was a dead heron curled up by the wall at Burbage North at the weekend, just over the wall from where you park your cars.

Wonder if its been blown up there, or whether they feed in the brook there??  Perhaps hit by a car?

Amazing bird to see up close.
