Ex-pats don't bloody count!! "Oh yeah I move to Thailand in 04, yeah we regularly get tigers boa constrictors elephants and those fucking spiders the size of a small dog that ensure Fiend won't go anywhere near the bloody country etc etc".

Herons are cool. Used to get on in my garden a lot. Like a pteradactyl when they take off!!

a few months ago there was a bat in the crack Usurper starts up at Curbar

Had this a few times at Cratcliffe, the first time I was soloing Fern Hill when a couple of them started chittering at my hands, a bit off-putting until I worked out what they were!

etc etc  :P

I'm pretty sure I've encountered a bat in a crack, there's a vague memory of the whole squeaking/strange furry thing vibe, no idea where tho.

So I can cross you off the list of prospective visitors to our place then!!?  Had to scoop one of these critters up and move it outside earlier this evening!

Dave C, you utter bastard.  :spank:  I jumped and screamed like Fiend a pathetic girl when I scrolled past that.  Thankfully the bat and possum in the next post calmed me so I won't punter you, this time.  >:(

Red Kites may be ten-a-penny near almscliff and caley but they're still beautiful birds all the same! You know it's gonna be a good day at the crag when you see one.

amen to that, preach.

Why does that link say african fauna? You wouldn't be trying to pass of African spiders as Australian ones would you?

I was confronted by an unhappy green mamaba walking into a crag in the Magaliesberg once. We had to retreat a safe distance and throw sticks at it until it buggered off.

Fiend, I should stress it was the first time I encountered bats in cracks, not the first time I soloed Fern Hill.

I saw a red kite under Higgar whilst I was on my way to work last year. Lots of Ring Ouzels and grouse of course. I love my commute.

There was a Barn Owl with chicks on the back wall of Horseshit quarry last spring, we watched it carry mice back to the nest at dusk.

Recent highlights would be:

A stag in the garden
A rabbit sat at the front door when I opened it (OK rabbits are 10 a penny, but at the door?)
A bird of prey (not good at birds so can't be more specific) taking out a pigeon mid-flight then gutting it on the neighbours lawn.
Lots of bats with their mad skittery flying style.
The kites at Almscliff are cool even if they are common.

Didn't a bat live in the break on the Salmon slab?

P.S. Good man, JB ;)

P.P.S. Red Kites might be common at Almscliff but I am not common at Alsmcliff, even so I've only seen one once in 6-10 visits.

P.P.P.S. I would be much more impressed with a Salmon living in the break on the Salmon slab.

You're evil Dave!

I fucking hate Huntsman. Last time I woke up to one lurking on the wall behind my bed - Big one too. Thankfully don't get them so much since moving house, although one jumped from the under the lid of the barbie a few months ago. Scared the shit out of me.  :o

But they aren't poisonous are they? We used to have a few that wandered around the roof of the bedroom. Left them there, as they are good for getting rid of insects.

Fortunately only ever encountered a red roman spider once. Now there's an ugly agressive little fucker (the Joe Pesci of the arachnid world). Would embed a pic, but it might not go down too well. Google if you want to see.

Good thread this.

Recent bird book ticks include......
(All in the Mersey Estuary)
Whimbrel - Like Curlew but slightly smaller
Ringed Plovers - Cute
Shelducks - Never seen these in the Mersey before
Turnstones - Cute
Redshanks - Common
Greenshanks - Less common

(Elsewhere)
Goldeneye - flock of around 15 simultaneously diving on Windermere
Smew - small flock of four on Esthwaite Water whilst fishing
Goosander - Windermere
Red Breasted Merganser - Also Windermere

Other wildlife spots include..

Porpoises - in the Mersey!
Deer - in the Lakes
Loads of foxes by my flat.

Very jealous of the Adder spot Bonjoy. Have only ever seen dead ones on the LLeyn and would love to get the opportunity to see a live one!

Saw deer in Glendalough a couple of weeks ago. Not particularly unusual in itself, but this time there were loads of them! I lost count in the high forties. Forced down from the high ground due to all the snow no doubt. Made walking out really creepy, lots of funny noises and dozens of pairs of eyes shining back at me out of the dark! :o
