When I was but a nipper and my grandpapa showed me his seven inch's I was overawed to say the least. The star's of his collection in my eyes were two singles. Firstly "Little white Bull" by Tommy Steele and "Battle of New Orleans" by Lonnie Donegan, master of Skiffle. On a whim, tonight I searches for the Lonnie version, found it, played it, was a little disappointed. "You don't fucking say" I here you shout. THEN I found the original by Johnny Horton. Again, interesting version but still disappointing. "Surprise, surprise" you scream....Now, struggling to see through the tears I caught sight of the man himself. Had he released a version of this classic track? Indeed. Settle back with a mug of Cocoa and one of those giant mono-slipper things....Brace yourselves....I give you
A)Johnny Horton

B)Lonnie Donegan

C)The man Himself

What-a-voice.

I have been wracking my brain to try and remember the Goats tune off No Goats No Glory that's based on Battle of New Orleans...

Something something down the mighty Missisip,
We took a lotta blunts and we took a lotta weed, etc

Ah yes...

Mutiny

(Fuck fuck fuck you up, etc)

In 1993 I took a litle trip,
Along with Swayzak down the mighty Missisip',
I took a lotta blunts, We took a lotta weed,
We chased them nazis to the (something) in New Orleans,
We fired our guns but them Nazis kept on coming,
Bunged in a clip and started to unload.
We fired our guns and the punks started running (?),
Down the Missisippi to the Gulf of Mexico,
Tell your bros, fuck the (something something, etc)
I'm a heavyweight contender,
Mix my styles in a blender,
Never I surrender,
Fuck that love (something),
Something something,
Hush hush before I bust you in the ass ya little punk,
Something something,
You only need a gun if you can kill a politician,
Or some nasty clown,
Something something,
Keep talking constipated or watch your shit get stuck up your butt,
Something else...

Word to Chico,
Got chased down to Puerto Rico,
Started taking Nazis out like my name was Nico,
It's the truth G,
They tried to get me in the mutiny,
Now every Nazi in the town is trying to shoot me...

And so on...

Well obviously the Man in Black wins hands down , but having said that I like the drums in the Johnny Horton version and twanging lead guitar in Lonnie Donegan's take ... Maybe a composite could be produced ? .....

Mmmm. Johnny Horton (second verse especially) sounds like the Cowboy I would wanna be. I still like the Lonnie vocal dickabout too but the little fucker just overdoes it. Mr Cash's vocals knock them both into his own cocked stetson though. I wonder what was going through  Mr Hortons mind when the props girl stuck that white Davy Crocket affair on his noggin as he's giving it the pre-tune testicles, testicles 1-2-3 treatment.

Horton's performance is certainly very nervous , a lot of eyebrow twitching going on there ..... Mind you I 'd be nervous if I had a load of highly suspect soldiers chasing each other behind my back ....
