20 per day? Pah! Sometimes i've had hundreds.

If you have access to your mailserver then installing something like spamassasin is a good idea - sendmail can also check mail against blacklists and delete them before they get to you.

If you don't have any control over your mail server then the easiest solution is to just get a new email address.

Failing that programs like Mailwasher (there is a free version) is pretty good at sifting out junk by defining filters and blocking addresses.

A good idea to stop yourself getting any more junk is to use a disposable email service like Spamgourmet whenever you use your emal address in a non-trusted environment online.

Unfortunately it's pretty hard to guard yourself against spam entirely, as even seemingly reputable companies will sell off your email address and you'll end up getting spammed that way.

Best way I find is to be very carefull who you give your email address to.
I have 2 email address', one which I only use between my friends and important things and the second I use for registering with sites and booking things over the internet, eg torrent sites and easy jet or when giving out email for other reason.
Obviously its too late for all this, I would suggest abadoning that address and starting again

You can likely configure your mail client (if you use POP3 or IMAP to download mails from a server to your computer) to filter these to trash automatically.  Thunderbird will do this for you using some built in rules, but there are tips and some guidance here.  Further googling for 'regular expression spam filter' might lead to something useful too.

Thats a good start people, thanks i will look into the links and decide on the best course of action. I really don't want to change my email if possible.
Years ago with junk mail through the post you could send of to this company ( can not remember who ) and for a fiver they could remove your name from mailing lists, oh the good old days.
Thanks again.

That's a point - never, ever click a link that says "remove me from your email list" or "unsubscribe from these emails" etc.

With the most reputable companies, this might work, but in most cases all you're doing is confirming that your email address is alive and well...get ready for more spam!

Problem is that your email address is already on a large number of spam databases and will continue to increase as your email gets thrown around,
if you run a spam filter then you risk losing genuine emails unless you go through all junk mail folder which is what your trying to avoid so thats a bit of a loser.
Best off biting the bullet and starting with a fresh email address and being very carefull with it. After all having a cool email address doesn't really get you anywhere in life where as sorting through spam is a drain on your life
