V12
October 04, 2003, 12:10:34 pm
This is largely a silly spin off thread from Mr Panton's V12 Outdoor one, if they did only let people who could climb V12 into the shop who would there be in the shop? and does it matter that they can't do V12's now? (e.g. Jerry  )

Ben Moon,
Malcolm Smith
Jerry Moffat
Tim Clifford
Andy Brown
Mark Katz
Stu Littlefair
Ru Davies
Dave buchanan
Andy Harris
John Gaskins

There must be loads - I can't think of them tho...

Chris Davies
Richard Simpson
Steve Dunning
Mat Birch
Paul Savage
Dave MaCleod
Andy Earl
John Welford
Sean Myles
Jason Myers
Mo Overfield
Stu Cameron
Danny Cattell
Neil Dyer
Si O'Conor
Higg

...and probably a few more who've slipped through the sieve

I guess that's quite a few people, maybe we should enforce the entry rule and keep the riff-raff out.

Problem is most people who climb V12 get a lot of stuff free, so your shop might not sell to much.

Look on the bright side at least they've not called it V15 Outdoor I don`t think Mr. Gaskins would keep you going from his minimal purchases.

Lads, Lads - you're going about this all wrong.

Ru and I were chinwagging about our favourite topic (who's hot and who's not), and we concluded that there were shit loads of people who could climb hard (in this case we were talking about French 8c), but very few people who actually do.

Those people who could, but don't are, in reality, lazy, foppish, work-shy bastards and don't deserve our publicity. So, if it was my shop I'd only let in those people who actually are climbing V12 right now.

(Vickers, Gaskins, Smith, Moon, Dunning, O' Connor?)

At least I wouldn't be busy.

Stu, I get your point, but even the best only climb V12 a few times a year, so we are going to have to impose an arbitrary time scale in which the shopper should have climbed V12. Say 6 months.

Better still, there could be a woodie next to the door with a V12 problem on it, and a bouncer. Get up the V12 problem or your not coming in. That would really sort the potential purchaser from the window shoppers.

There's probably a flaw in this solution, but I can't see it.

a selection of V12's with varying styles might be fairer on the shoppers

but how many goes would you allow before giving the Bouncer the right to put his boot in?

You could do a system of graded discount based on the number of attempts, for instance to be given the opportunity to purchase at trade + VAT you could flash the problem, 20% if you do it second go (or feel all the holds first) and no discount but guaranteed entry for doing it inside three goes.

This isn't supposed to be fair. If you can't climb any given v12, can you really claim to be a V12 climber?

To illustrate the point, here's Ru failing to climb V12 (probably 'cos he's lost a hand - that would slow me down)

He doesn't look very impressed at the lack of right limb either. I hadn't noticed he was standing on the floor until you pointed that out.

What do you mean, 'What V12's has the Darwin Weasel ever done?' Dobbin? He's probably done more problems of V12 or harder than most of the people named in the above lists! Off the top of my head he made very short work of an early repeat of Mandala, whizzed along the V13/14 traverse thing of Gaskins at Woodwell (the one with very small grips on Stick It) and got the tick in 2 visits, and has repeated dirty hard things in Yorkshire such as Slim Shady at Earl - I could go on.....
As ever, a quiet and weasely boulderer who does things but doesn't make much of a fuss about it. As an example, Ian and Jamie Cassidy both did Intense (Jerry's V12 at Burbage south) on Saturday - although we can't count these ascents as it's probably only a V10 starting from the high holds a la Jerry...........

Dear Perc, I know and love the weasel too. In fact for last year I stalked him exclusively, so much so that poor Mr Moon thought he was uncool all year. However the mind of the climbing superstar stalker is fickle and after nearly three weeks of following the weasel I saw Bent Spoon at the Lost Arrow comp, and once again, it was love.

I didn't know that he'd done that death traverse of Gaskins - very good effort. I once met him at Longridge and he did the whole of that Tony mitchell Traverse whilst talking to me, without even having the decency to sound out of breath. Pig.

Love as always 'Avid Merrion of the rock climbing world' Dobbin.

probably worth V15 in reality - the extra being due to the impossibility of resisting the desire to walk away.

I only found it cos I was looking for a good spot to have a piss....

Mo's is another dark horse who has done a load of hard stuff but not blown his own trumpet! E.g: First Ascent of The Scream at Hueco - one of the early and super classic V12's at the Tank's that had a few strong boys pant's down! Took Sharma and Dave Graham a while to repeat it......
Bohemian Groove is a very un-compelling line, I will conceed, but I think that Mo was going for difficulty rather than aesthetics. Having had the mis-fortune of trying it with Mo a year or two ago, I can vouch for the fact that it is very, very tricky, and has very, very smalls grips on it!
