Ableton Live V7.   Get a cracked version from a torrent site.  It's €400 new.  And if you haven't got near-field monitors find some excellent headphones.

Propellerheads Reason is fantastic and a lot of fun to use.

Again, find a snide copy as it's very expensive.

There is no one best package, different ones have their fans...

I like Reason, but it isn't simple to "dabble".

In was meaning it's a lot of work to get a tune out of Reason.  takes me quite a while twiddling knobs to get the sounds I want, then a while for tune and orchestration.
There's other things out there that are simpler.

I don't think Ableton is that easy to dabble in really either tbh...

For dabbling maybe things like Fruityloops might be better? What do you recommend GCW?

I've found Reason quite good for doing some basic loops and stuff - rig up a couple of Redrums and just program some drum loops - lots of fun.

Cubase is the other big package but never tried it.

There's always Rebirth which gives you a 303, 808 and a 909 to mess about on, and is a free download :)

Can't talk of Ableton, not used it.
ReBirth is useful and easy to get going with, if you can get hold of it (it's now bundled with Reason).
Cubase is easy to use, and with the VSTis you can bang out tunes fairly quick.  You can still import samples too, so it's a fair place to start.
Frooty Loops is another good place to start.

Sorry, missed that.  That's a refill, Bubbs.  the stand alone package should be obtainable from somewhere Torrenty.  I got the original CD (look at me  :P )

Oops, I'm observant today.

That's a great place to start, Adam, especially if you then use Reason to import ReBirth loopings.  Plus you can export .wav from ReBirth to use in other programs.  ANd you can't get a better 303 sound!!

Cubase is what I use to make all my tunes and I love it- useful, quick, fairly simple, but most of all logical, which is what I value in it. And all my tunes are ace. (not)

I'm not sure of the value of dabbling myself (though I'd agree Ableton is not easy to get to grips w/).  Better to find a format that does what you want w/ out pissing you off; something you can stick w/ over time (you'll need 3 years just to get your head round any serious program).  Most of the people I know who make techno use it (Cubase and Logic appear to be the other platforms of choice), so I've a great knowledge base to tap into.

www.abletonlivedj.com is a good place to join.
