Decent crags for bouldering near Manchester ?
December 20, 2008, 06:57:42 pm
Just moved to Manchester and need some info on local crags for bouldering/sport climbing if there are any that don't feature in the commonly available guides? Thanks in advance.

Just moved to Manc? This one is in the process of being developed at the moment, about 4 hours not miles south of Glossop

See you at a wall soon.....

hobson moor is a good venue for bouldering eliminates and trad routes.
Frodsham and brownstones are also close by for bouldering.

The best thing about living in manchester is that most of the good climbing is within 1.5 hours drive away and you get to go to different crags a lot more

Jim, that's twice you've mentioned Brownstones   Guide Here if you need it.

It depends whereabouts in Manchester you live.  There's a lot of places you can get to, and as Jim says 90 minutes will get you to lots of good venues.

Wimberry is always a winner and is about 25/30 mins away from the centre. You're only 50 minutes away from stanage if you get up early and get a good run through Glossop (I've been taking the back roads route lately). Then there is always the Pump House in Fallowfield...

It wasn't a serious recommendation really. It is a pump house with grit blocks on the outside of it that offers very fingery traversing possibilities and is good for an hour on a summer's evening if you are in the vicinity. It is the last right turn off Mosely Rd before it hits the A34 Kingsway and is right near the railway. At the end of that road, you will see it. I would prefer Hobby Moor or Wimberry if you can make it out TBH!

Thanks folks, Broughton is the closest crag I've found. When Raven tor and rubicon were sopping Broughton was in pristine condition. Most of my skin is on sector 3.

Broughton isn't really a crag per say, but probably should be as its better than many proper crags.

Just be aware that the temps at Broughton are usually the same as outdoors so dress appropriately, it gets fucking baltic in there.

For indoors I can reccomend Broughton although it's bloody savage!
For outdoors, too many to mention, but Brownstones and Wilton are quality, as is Wimberry / chew valley generally - don't think you're spoilt for choice with sport climbing though...

shorts and a wife beater are all well and good if you have the requisite levels of "insulation"
