Sea fishing on Saturday
June 06, 2008, 01:04:21 am
Tomorrow (Sat 7th June) I am off to Briddlington for a days fishing on a boat called The Rachel K. Anyone want to come or want a lift to Brid (bouldering on Flamborough Head looks shit) - space for another 3 in the car. Boat leaves Brid at 8am, all gear provided, £35 for 6 hrs. Will prob leave Sheff at 5.30am. If you want to check that Peter has room on his boat for you, phone him on 01262671723. There will be a means based assessment to determine the petrol share contribution  :)

Would lve to, but it's too long a haul for me. Northumberland is about the most I canmanage on a weekend. Fancy Stonehaven next time :).

Actually need to get gear out and head for the cliffs, haven't done any this year.

It was good. Plenty of wrasse, pouting, small cod (all returned). Brought home 2 of the bigger cod (4-5lb) a decent haddock of similar size and a plaice (2lb).

Was surprised not to catch any makerell.

Watching the puffins flying to Bempton cliffs was nice

Haddock was barbequed last night - used some soaked wood chips over the charcoal to give it a light smoking, very nice. Plaice tonight

Sounds good. My access rope for the local spot is going back in tonight.

sounds like a good haul, any idea on what's up with the mackerel this year? Either I'm more rubbish than usual, or they're very late/all been caught by the spanish

Apparently there's mackerel about. Spring tide too, but sadly the haar is in, not really conducive to pleasant fishing conditions.

So, has anyone got out sea fishing over the last 7 months?

I recently re-aquired the bug after finally managing to catch some bass down in Devon in October and have been putting plenty of cod hours in! Plenty of flounder like this 1lb 8oz baby...

Sorry for the F/book link!

...and some decent sized whiting to be had, unfortunately this is turning out to be the worst cod season on the Mersey for years. It seems the South and East coast is having a bumper season with catches reminiscent of ten years ago!

Anything to report?

No. Will try and get out when there is some milder weather. My brother is here end of Jan, I think he will be up for a spot.

Had a bumper crop at Perch Rock this time last year but not made it out at all these last few months. Surprised the Mersey isn't fishing too well as the cold snap has been with us for quite some time now. Last year was immense around this period.

Quite keen to get re-involved with the match scene. My last great moment was back in 1995 when I won my zone in a big open competition around the Wirral. Crushing those Mustad England internationals into the dirt.  I want to relive the glory days! Hope to join you soon Si.

Certainly plenty of trout in the bars on the banks of the Mersey but not sure about in the river in it's fresh water upper reaches. My nan used to give me the Echo fishing reports back in the day and I can't ever remember them mentioning trout.

There's certainly trout in the upper reaches and I've even heard reports of salmon so I wouldn't rule out sea trout either. a Friend of mine did quite well for salmon on the Dee last year, fish up to 15lb!

Going back to the cod and match fishing, this seasons winter league has been a complete washout, with double shots of flounder winning some rounds!! I think it's going to be a case of forgetting about the cod this season, concentrate on the flatteis (plaice should be in soon) and then bass. Bringon the Hoyle Bank!

There used to be a lot of truth in that! I remember many a session walking headlong into a beach strewn with dense patches of turd at Perch Rock. The stench was unimaginable! And to wonder why we actually used to think catching fish here was desirable  :-\

Some years later, it was reported that a Lumpsucker was found in the Mersey. I remember being told that these fish (apart from being a rarity in these parts) will only thrive in clean water. How true this is, I don't know but I do know from reading that they spend time in muddy water (hence why the estuary was probably desirable to it). Ecologically, I'm sure it was a promising sign in that they normally occupy the deeper waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans where the waters are markedly cleaner than the Mersey.

A link with a mention of it being found  here.
