Leafing through the New Yorker (the first print edition of my new subscription) I noticed a short piece about Kemistry & Storm’s DJ Kicks mix. Apparently this was never reissued when the CD sold out, but it’s now on Apple Music / Spotify as well as vinyl - some banging late 90s tunes.

I have a hazy memory of drunkenly riding a Kong Explosif (wIth a mate on a Chopper) into central London, spending most of the night at Movement / Bar Rumba with K&S and Grooverider, and then somehow cycling back on bikes that miraculously had not been stolen...

Bukem just delivered a guest mix on Mary Anne Hobb's show on 6music. Smooth liquid rollers as you'd expect. Quality tunes delivered by a connoisseur of the scene. Listen again on BBC Sounds App if it appeals.

That Bukem mix included the brilliant Flume track - The Difference - , which I think would provide a potent pre-ascent anabolic-syke advantage to a certain knee-protection-connoisseur...

Some cracking suggestions.  God this was such a creative time wasn't it?

I bought Doc Scott's Nasty Habits remastered off Bandcamp a few weeks back. It's great.

Fiend just read the recommendation, thanks I will listen later.

Sure was. I think my favourite era of D'n'B is still 1996-2000 early techstep. Stuff like No U-Turn and early Hardware through to Dom & Roland and BC....I love how some of the tracks had massive depth and darkness and atmosphere and aggression without being an OTT cacaphony. Shadow Boxing is a prime example, dark but catchy as fuck and still creative to this day.

Edit 1: If I ever learnt to mix, I've already got this track list mapped out to represent that flavour....

Renegade - Terrorist (mixes well into PF? intro?)
Alex Reece - Pulp Fiction ?
J Majik - Your Sound (into metropolis)
Adam F - Metropolis (steppy beat - into ni ten?)
Ed Rush & Nico - Torque (sparse beat, into ni ten)
Photek - Ni Ten Ich Ryu (into shadow boxing - oriental feel)
Nasty Habits - Shadow Boxing (into dark soldier, clean dark bass)
Renegade - Dark Soldier (dark bass into mutant?)
Trace - Mutant Revisited (almost the same as sonar!)
Trace - Sonar (dark bass mixes into still)
Boymerang - Still (growly bass mixes into shining)
Optical - The Shining (2 step beat mixes into secrets)
John B - Secrets (2 step beat mixes into edtrafienicol)
Various - Edtrafienical
Ed Rush & Fierce - Locust
Ed Rush - The Raven (lighter bits mix into mute)
Matrix - Mute ? (weird snares into shape the future)
Optical - To Shape The Future (dark vibe into mind weaver)
Source Direct - Mind Weaver (got amen snippets in into f2b)
Souljah - Fade 2 Black (amen)

Edit 2: In the meantime, this John B retro mix is quite simply excellent:

Check out the tracklist in the comments....phenomenal.

Photek has a new drum ‘n bass album out soon.  The clip I heard sounds mega.

I’ve got ten of your playlist on vinyl so could almost do a mix  :-\

Great list Fiend...

I was really into Photek for a while. Things like Kjz on Modus Operandi sounded unlike another else... Have you seen the 808 film Fiend? There’s a nice DnB bit, with Omni Trio / Goldie, etc..

Enjoyed this Doc Scott Boiler Room:

I discovered during the lockdown that one of the best radio stations i listen to in the car is not only online, but got the latest 3 of each 'shows' available to listen and download.

The session i've been listening to the most from one of my favourite guys is probably being pulled tomorrow Friday, so i thought i'd give a heads up if anyone wants to grab it before it goes. Not only he plays quality D&B but he does a lot of really cool mini-mixes and some bootleg style jobbies. It's the 27/03 session here https://flexfm.co.uk/podcast/mutley/

The station has a load of D&B content and it's worth a perusal btw. Used ot be pirate, it's gone legal but luckily still has the vibe which is awesome, as is the music

How the flaming nutsac I missed a new Dom and Roland god only knows. Lockdown really did rot my sense of self. Anyway....

domandroland.bandcamp.com/album/lost-in-the-moment-full-album

Only a few tracks in but it seems to be at least as varied and well-crafted as his formidable Last Refuge Of A Scoundrel predecessor.

If you like it on the harder side of DnB these are two absolutely firing mixes from the master Tech Itch (I'd forgotten about him recently which is shameful of me). A great blend of fierce tech-step, industrial jungle, and dark rollers, yes it might seem silly paying for mixes, but when they're this good....

Hang on hang on, why did no-one tell me there was a new Homemade Weapons album released last year?? Shambolic. https://homemadeweapons.bandcamp.com/album/gravity If you want jungle to be a humorous, light-hearted, jolly japes sort of place, turn away now. This is SERIOUS. Deep and deadly abstract beat manipulation. Strictly for those with breakbeats in their blood.

Had my records out this week. It’s pure nostalgia listening to DnB for me- I know almost nothing about anything released after about 2005 and I've forgotten lots of the ones from before that, even though I own about a thousand of them. Here’s some I rediscovered. No idea if they’re considered obvious classics or dusty relics nowadays.

This was my anthem (like the classic “Circles” it repeats Cheque, Cheque, Cheque, Cheque before the drop  ;D ) there are remixes but the original is the best.

This one is pure chaos, can be played over the top of another tune’s calm bit (I used to use the peerless “Echo Box”) to increase the pressure , then taken out to let that one drop or left in. Either way a rewind is guaranteed which lets you leave this one to drop and change to its more “heads down” atmosphere without feeling like the momentum has decreased.

This is too tech for me to have played it out but it’s my favourite Dom & Roland track. I’m sure Fiend knows it.

This gives me the fucking chills. There’s an easier-to-find-on-YouTube VIP mix but it’s basically the same thing just cheesed up slightly. One of the few DnB tracks that appears to change speed  (It doesn’t really though- I do have a more liquidy track that slows to a standstill before coming right back but I couldn’t find it last night as I only remember the colour of the label...) which is a useful tool to have. This version’s a little fast as it’s taken from a mix CD.

Really wanted to post an Artificial Intelligence track called Sky High but that’s not on Yooch sadly.

A number of the Brazilian DnB tracks sound a bit dated to me now (to be fair it might be because the smoother tracks always need a good/ big/ loud system to reveal their true heaviness) but this one is still good:

Top post Cheque!

Had only heard the Baron Remix of Nosher but you're right the original might pip it.

Since you mentioned Echo Box...

How about this for an alternative Artificial Intelligence pic, you might like this one:

Drop is  :dance1: :wall: :punk:

It sounds to me like you need to do a mix TBH :)

Edit:

15 years after your knowledge of drum and bass stopped, people are still making really nice tracks:

Also have this beauty:

Brand new DJ Krust out last week. Just first since 2006 and it’s an absolute f’ing belter.

Plus these one’s from this year (I don’t think they’ve popped up on the thread yet).

Adred “Kim” https://metalheadz.bandcamp.com/album/kim.

Mako “Oeuvre” https://metalheadz.bandcamp.com/album/oeuvre

Lupo “Impossible” EP https://thirtyonerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/impossible-ep

And something a bit mellower.

Calibre “Shelflife Six” https://calibre.bandcamp.com/album/shelflife-six

Jungle and Drum ‘n Bass, the gift that keeps on giving.  :2thumbsup:

Jungle and Drum ‘n Bass, the gift that keeps on giving.  :2thumbsup:

Amen to that!!

This might also be up people's streets, A-Sides still going strong with straight up dnb at 50:

https://asides.bandcamp.com/album/50-shades-of-a

And I forgotten to mention these dudes before when I posted those phenomenal Tech Itch mixes:

https://doompoets.techitch.com/album/dead-forest

https://doompoets.techitch.com/album/lost-connection

Deep dark slightly left-of-centre jungle, I love it.

Oh and on the jungle tip, Trace's other label is on hiatus but had some gems:

https://soundcloud.com/117records/sets/forbidden-codes-2

It's only 7.50 fuck alls on Juno so I reckon that's 39000 beats per quid or something.

Just going through A-Sides recent back catalogue and this is a fine album, mostly upbeat stuff with some dark bits and some soft bits:

https://asides.bandcamp.com/album/revisited

Also keeping it generally acceptable but still proper d'n'b, Digital has been maybe the most reliable producer in recent years, and if cheque wants something that sums up "normal" good dnb of the modern age, a couple of his compilations would be the perfect place to start:

Okay so this week I've mostly been listening to Samurai records. This is quite a contrast to the stuff Cheque posted and I replied with, distinctly radio un-friendly (an immediate selling point), not by being particularly hard, dark, fast nor noisy, but by being uncompromisingly deep, often fairly abstract, and even more cheese-free than my miserable ibs diet. I mostly knew Samurai from putting out Homemade Weapon's weighty releases, but delving deeper I've found their compilations work better (HW can get a bit relentless over an album) with a good blend of ambient jungle, dark minimal dnb, and plenty of deep halftime / autonomic (the stuff d-Bridge et al curated) tracks.

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/music

These have been top picks so far:

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/album/outliers-2

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/album/outliers-1

https://samuraimusic.bandcamp.com/album/samurai-hannya

3 really good comps, o-2 and hann being more varied than o-1

Also a jungle release from ASC which is quite splendid:

https://asc77.bandcamp.com/album/an-exact-science

Definitely suitable chill-out listening for these dark and gloomy evenings....

I'm guessing I am now, a bit?? I don't like all of that style as standard, but when it works it's really vibey and provides a great contrast to the more hectic pace I normally listen to.
