which broadband?
November 24, 2007, 10:47:01 pm
so i'm still having beef with my broadband connection

this time i reckon i will cancel so which broadband should i go for? Bulldog was pretty cheap so i don't want to be paying shitloads for a fucking massive connection - i don't download movies n shit.

IMPORTANT: i don't have a BT line and you don't need one for bulldog, so i'd prefer to carry on without one rather than paying for two things. unless someone can convince me otherwise (£££ etc)

hit me.

I always recommend Nidram, but nobody ever listens and just goes with BT or some other horror show

Think Broadband is a good site. you can do your own speed test, and also see how other users have rated their own ISPs. Zen have always come out really highly. We've got them for my work place, and they seem to do fine. You have to already have an account with someone else in order for it to work i.e. one site is with someone else, and all the emails regarding the service go there. That's probably just the business service they do though. They do a home service too I believe.

I'm in the process of changing my broadband. Anyone got any new suggestions for broadband in Sheffield? I currently have BT which claims up to 8 Mbps but I only get 4.

If you've got a contract with O2 then its definately worth considering as you get it half price or if you've been with them for ages you might be able to get it for free like me

Tiscali do some good packages. 20 squid a month gets you phone line rental, upto 8mb download (though technology and location likely to cut speeds down), unlimited evening and weekend calls, and a pretty good cable tv package, which you can bolt other things onto.

When my talktalk contract runs out in August, I'm probably going to switch to it.

Have a look at these too

It looks like I'll be ditching Virgin pretty soon in light of their announcement a few weeks ago. I'm looking for an uncapped service, with no bandwidth throttling, at least 8MB down, with decent upload bandwidth, that is also reasonably priced.

I found this interesting link so you can see for yourself if you are getting shaped service from your ISP.

Which announcement was that?  Is it the  spying on users activity? Am also with Virgin and have been considering moving for a while and have similar requirements so recommendations welcome.

I currently have TV and phone through Virgin too, so recommendations for bundles are also welcome, Sky+ bundles standard service seems to be 2Mbps which is rather poo and it seems to be quite expensive for fast broadband with them.

Shameless plug time: Phone Cooperative

probably need a BT line for this but i have recently signed up to their LLU service (so i don't pay a separate BT line rental anymore )

they've got ethics too....http://www.thephone.coop/residential/index.html?gclid=CPujlJ6bopcCFQO2FQod2l4z_Q

off peak calls, 8Mbps wideband and line rental from £24

one major advantage of having a small company as your provider is that you are safe in the knowledge that you can email or (shock horror) speak to a native brit when things go pear shaped or you forget your modem user/passkey

Ethical Consumer Magazine 'Best Buy' for Fixed Line, Mobile and Line Rental services, 'highly recommended' for Broadband (2008)

Rated 2nd best for customer satisfaction by WHICH? readers (2006).
