Burbage Valley Christmas Party
November 13, 2008, 09:05:27 pm
Me, my brother and some friends are trying to organsie a party thing at Burbage Valley, A Very Christmas-y party + Climbing

We are hoping to Choose a day between the 18th and the 22nd of December.. Depending on the Weather!, we will pick one of the days nearer to the time and announce the day.

We will be Climbing All around the Burbage Valley, Sarting at Burbage N, then S, then Higgar tor, Burbage W, then back round to burbage N to finish.. a whole circuit.. and then at the end have a bit of a christmas-y party with drinks and food ect,

Santas Hats are fairly compulsary :)

Young, old, and everything in-between are welcome :)

If we pick the right day, and have full ammuntion of skin, i can pretty much garentee the following:It will be a very good day out
The Friction should be 'top'
There will be NO rubbish left behind

Reply please :)

I'm always up for a bit of festive cheer. Sadly I'll probably be on the Isle of Man but if not I'll drag Mrs At Work and At Work Jnr along for carols and climbing.

I can recommend mulled wine in a flask for pre and post bouldering. Did this one new year at Font and it went down a treat!

On a slightly serious note I would be more than happy to cater the event (usual rules no babies. dogs, irish, jews, non drinkers etc).

I'd suggest a £5 donation (mountain resuce) for decent wine, whisjy and canapes, any takers?

maybe we should organise a rival Tor christmas shindig. Shuffle back and forth across the bottom of Sardine, hang stockings on the first bolts of In Brine and Rooster Booster, share a mince pie and flask of mulled wine with stone and keith. winner.

Zippy will be destroyed not to be included. This will be a difficult situation no doubt. Poor Zips, sat crying under Ben's roof whilst we chow down on mincers. Sigh.

Absobluddylutely! Me and dense  :pissed: :shag: :wank:  I do love xmas - I'm like an 8 yr old about it, but the idea of trailing around the Burbage Valley with loads of people absolutely does not appeal. Small groups fine, big groups whine.

Happened to pass a sweet rack whilst buying petrol the other day and thought I'd help clear this up once and for all....

Thus humbugs have a brown colouration and the stripes run along the length of the sweet, whilst everton mints have a black colouration that runs transverse to the longest dimensio of the sweet.

I hope everyone can sleep soundly now  ::)

No, but I almost got arrested when I tried offering said sweets to some kids.

Fair enough, we wouldn't want to be erroding the standards of SCIENCE.  I shall endeavour to increase the sample size on future outings.  Granelli's by Park Square is just round the corner and will serve as the ideal starting point  :P

i'm sure humbugs are classically supposed to have a longitudinal twist, or at least ends crimped off a 90 degrees to each other.

At work I'm trying to settle an argument about the font size used on the cover of 'Razzle' and 'Huge wobbling jubblies (monthly)' - any chance you could pop along to the garage and take a picture of both of them for me??  ;)

re: Humbugs. I have in front of me some co-op humbugs, and they are definately like exhibit A from your post - no crimped off ends - oval shapes, stripes running longtitudinally... tt

From humbugsuk:

http://www.humbugsuk.co.uk/shop_details.asp?productID=570&productName=Black_&_White_Mint_Humbugs

but also.....

http://www.humbugsuk.co.uk/shop_details.asp?productID=568&productName=Barker_&_Dobson_Mint_Humbugs_

And........

"HUMBUG Etymology

The use of the word humbug for a stripy peppermint-flavoured boiled sweet seems to date from the nineteenth century: the Oxford English Dictionary notes it as being ‘remembered in common use in Gloucestershire’ in the 1820s, while Elizabeth Gaskell in Sylvia's Lovers (1863) explained: ‘He had provided himself with a paper of humbugs for the child—“humbug” being the north-country term for certain lumps of toffy, well-flavoured with peppermint."

So it seems that the shape is not important. The difference with Everton Mints is that they have a toffee centre as opposed to either a hard or soft mint centre in the humbug.

http://www.humbugsuk.co.uk/shop_details.asp?productID=351&productName=Barker_&_Dobson_Everton_Mints

Case closed.  :-\

Oh and from Wiki.....

"Humbugs are a traditional hard boiled sweet available in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. They are usually flavoured with peppermint and striped in two different colours (often black and white). Humbugs are typically cylinders with rounded ends wrapped in a twist of cellophane, or else pinched cylinders with a 90-degree turn between one end and the other (shaped like a pyramid with rounded edges), loose in a bag."

Word.
