Their Span is the maximum distance they can generate between the fingertips of their left and right hands.
Their Reach is the maximum distance they can reach while using a given set of holds.
A climbers Reach is therefore always equal to (or more often) less than their Span.

no. span is horizontal distance between fingertips. reach is how high you can reach up a flat wall off the floor. the two are therefore not always related.

with technique though, you can reach through a span or span through a reach. its all about working with what you've got. with neither you should be at a disadvantage, but it doesn't seem to be borne out in practice.

ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?

Thought I recognised you from the pics in here, but didn't want to interupt.

That was us in who came in and sat in the back left with the greyhound.

Will say hello if I pass you again (live in Sheffield myself, possibly pass you riding down from Fulwood as I'm cycling up there to work some mornings?)

Shit just realised I sound like JB's stalker

That's what I thought as well - thanks JB

I think you are confusing reach with ReachTM here.

Its completely obvious that being tall is not an advantage for climbing since short people are stronger (and there's science to prove it) - reaching past moves if you're tall(ish) is just good technique  :)

Short people only moan about taller people 'lanking' moves because they feel inadequate.  :boohoo:

Yes, that's me too. Give us a wave next time. I don't work every week though.

Yes you do sound a bit like a stalker.

Oh he's tall. Relative to me I mean. But that makes most people tall...

Lots of people are tall, but Ian is lanky.
...as well he knows.
