Holeshot Font 7c
A long problem. Crouching start at the back of the roof near Beth’s Traverse at two small flakes.  Out to reach the footholds of Beth’s Traverse. Make a big move up and left to the arête and finish as for Jumping Jack Flash.

Quite shocked today at how hard Beth's Traverse is. Can't believe that used to get 7B+, what a sandbag!

PE crimping on positive ratters, I thought a sports climbing gent would be all over that one!

Yeah, only a short session so couldn't really try it properly but feel like you'd need massive rests between each go. And it canes your skin. Great moves though.

There's a note about Ian's finger strength in the back of one of the old Yorkshire guides.

This makes me feel better about never having quite managing to finish it off, despite getting through the crux numerous times

What did you think the crux was? I thought it was the last bit by miles, just before you join Jumping Jack Flash. I did it first go up to this point but found matching the last crimp very difficult indeed, it's only about 6 fingers wide when it needs to be 8!

Yeah exactly that, I remember a tenuous heel toe that benefitted from a stiff boot that allowed me to piano enough fingers off of my left hand and onto my right hand. I fell a few times off the next move or two to reach the big JJF jug!

I fell off that jump move on JJF about 5 times totally boxed and haven’t been back, also did the same on Holeshot, may point to a weakness in my climbing… Long overdue a rematch, thanks for the reminder!

Yeah I really miss that place, what a spot to be in spring when the moorland birds are all busily filling the air with a mixed-section orchestra of calls and the lambs vault jauntily in the limed-green fields bordering the moor! Need to get back there if only to do the easier classics and fall off Beth's when my fingers uncurl from the giant fluted jugs of JJF yet again

I was saying to Jim I reckon Goldsborough is the best kept secret of Gritstone bouldering (not that it's secret at all).

Roadside, beautiful location, dead quiet, great landings (George's Roof being the major exception and even that's pretty flat for the most part), good rock, decent lines, quick drying, and more straight up non-eliminate 7C and harder problems than Almscliff, not to mention a quality easier circuit, and various link-ups and eliminates. Only downside is how hard it is to catch it on a day when the wind isn't too strong.

Well keen to join. Although I've had 2 sessions on Holeshot and still haven't done all the moves!

I was really impressed, thought the easier problems were brilliant albeit often quite hard to start with the undercut nature of the buttresses.

Getting conditions up there outside of midwinter must be challenging. Also I bet that road gets interesting in icy conditions!

I'd also be keen for a Holeshot sesh.

It was this discussion here on UKB that inspired me to dig out some old photos from way back.

It’s a great perma dry destination close to Barnard Castle.

Has anyone tried/done Ians Arete there, the 7A? I thought that was absolutely nails as well. Felt closer to Beths!

If I remember correctly Ian didn't grade it, I tried it and couldn't climb it so I gave it V6 (6c). I do remember that Ian was climbing well at the time.

... and Ian didn't give it a name either.

I'd assumed it was named after his daughter?

Can we just put this in context; Ian came painfully close to climbing Cypher at Slipstones prior to Moon's ascent and I can tell you he wouldn't have been doing some futuristic leg flick. Ben did it when Ian was away in Joshua Tree and he subsequently lost interest.

Did seem odd that he named his daughter after himself 😉

(serious mode: whoops, thought we were still talking about Beth's Traverse)

Add me to the list of failed suitors. Spent a good while nervously scrittling around before conceding that I hadn't a clue how to do it. For comparison, Layby Arete took me two goes.

I think a comprehensive descrittling off a rope, then trying it in good conditions would probably do the job. Clearly not 7A though. 7Bish probably nearer the mark.
