Goldsborough Carr
November 03, 2008, 10:02:45 pm
Any gen on bouldering at Goldsborough.  Looks like we're off for a family few days at CenterParcs, so was hoping to escape for some bouldering at some point.

Is there an online topo?  (found the demo for the new YG guide, partial info)
Any vital knowledge on conditions/drying time etc?
Is it any good?

C'mon, UKB, let's have some info!

I've been and thought it was shite. Possibly don't listen to me though as you won't catch me raving about many moorland crags with coarse rock. There was a Stone Circles on it a while back if you can get hold of it.

Jesus Christ.

Please don't listen to Monolith on this subject.  He's fine if you ask about design, techno, culture etc.  Don't listen to him about his opinion of climbing, sequences, grit or the like, as you'll get a load of ill-considered bollocks.  His opinion was mainly formed, I would summise, because there weren't many eliminates on dirty crimps up at Goldsborough.  Basically, it wasn't the Cave.

i too have been and i thought it was great.it was the middle of summer,we went there because it is exposed and breezy.so it could be a touch on the chilly side think blackstones.
that climbon guide is the one out of the north of england guide which is all there is other than the stone circles article.you might struggle to find a passing local to help you in avoiding using any illegal holds though.

NB:  I was not suggesting that the Cave is full of eliminates by the way.  It's just that what Monolith does there.  Probably.

as people have already said, it'll be windy and cold up there.
Its a great little spot. Either buy the North of England guide or hope to find Mr Cummins in situ up there.
Beths Traverse is the tick of the crag imo.

Hands up if you’ve ever been to Goldsborough Carr? Anybody? Okay, so there’s one or two Darlington locals who are waving a paw in the air, along with some of you lads and lasses from the Lakes and Northumberland, but the rest of you, no, I didn’t think so.

I've been thrice (admittedly one of those times I had a sudden attack of debilitating nausea and just about managed to crawl back to the car).

Cool crag. At it's best for easy highballs / solos and harder low roofs. Certainly would make for a fun day out in anyone's book. If there's any breeze, drying time will be instantaneous, as will hypothermia time. If by some miracle it's warm it would make a decent spot for the kids.

Newman and I had the misfortune of going to school right near it, it turned into quite a regular spot for me following Saturday morning lessons  :boohoo:

Ben's alright really; just a harmless ol' bumbley ;)

To be honest I thought the aspect of the crag was very pleasant (especially as we experienced it in a smattering of snow). I'm sure you'll have a very nice day out there GCW and you shouldn't listen to what I think of the place.

I wasn't massively impressed. Although...we went in a blizzard and missed the main crag until late in the day and had no form of topo. The monkey up a stick prow was cool (Old Moss?), with the ice and snow covered top out of death...amusing  :o

Thanks to everyone for the input.
I was on my way there today, but the cloud was low and 10 miles out it chucked it down so I never made it.  I'm keen for a visit in better conditions though, the countryside was impressive and the crag looks great.

Any knowledge on a topo for Goldsborough Carr? Climb Online one seems to be defunct. Few vids knocking about now but wondered if there's any more info than on UKC.

Edit: ignore me, just realised it's in Dunning's YG Bouldering vol 2.

Heading here tomorrow (is the plan based on Bradder’s suggestion, thanks!). I’ve got the Northern England Rockfax guide which doesn’t have Holeshot listed. Does anyone have a description of where this starts and ends (same ending as JJF?).

A long problem. Crouching start at the back of the roof near Beth’s Traverse at two small flakes.  Out to reach the footholds of Beth’s Traverse. Make a big move up and left to the arête and finish as for Jumping Jack Flash.

Yeah, only a short session so couldn't really try it properly but feel like you'd need massive rests between each go. And it canes your skin. Great moves though.

There's a note about Ian's finger strength in the back of one of the old Yorkshire guides.

What did you think the crux was? I thought it was the last bit by miles, just before you join Jumping Jack Flash. I did it first go up to this point but found matching the last crimp very difficult indeed, it's only about 6 fingers wide when it needs to be 8!

Yeah exactly that, I remember a tenuous heel toe that benefitted from a stiff boot that allowed me to piano enough fingers off of my left hand and onto my right hand. I fell a few times off the next move or two to reach the big JJF jug!

I fell off that jump move on JJF about 5 times totally boxed and haven’t been back, also did the same on Holeshot, may point to a weakness in my climbing… Long overdue a rematch, thanks for the reminder!

Yeah I really miss that place, what a spot to be in spring when the moorland birds are all busily filling the air with a mixed-section orchestra of calls and the lambs vault jauntily in the limed-green fields bordering the moor! Need to get back there if only to do the easier classics and fall off Beth's when my fingers uncurl from the giant fluted jugs of JJF yet again

I was saying to Jim I reckon Goldsborough is the best kept secret of Gritstone bouldering (not that it's secret at all).

Roadside, beautiful location, dead quiet, great landings (George's Roof being the major exception and even that's pretty flat for the most part), good rock, decent lines, quick drying, and more straight up non-eliminate 7C and harder problems than Almscliff, not to mention a quality easier circuit, and various link-ups and eliminates. Only downside is how hard it is to catch it on a day when the wind isn't too strong.

I fell off that jump move on JJF about 5 times totally boxed and haven’t been back, also did the same on Holeshot, may point to a weakness in my climbing… Long overdue a rematch, thanks for the reminder!

Well keen to join. Although I've had 2 sessions on Holeshot and still haven't done all the moves!

I was really impressed, thought the easier problems were brilliant albeit often quite hard to start with the undercut nature of the buttresses.

Getting conditions up there outside of midwinter must be challenging. Also I bet that road gets interesting in icy conditions!

I'd also be keen for a Holeshot sesh.

Can we just put this in context; Ian came painfully close to climbing Cypher at Slipstones prior to Moon's ascent and I can tell you he wouldn't have been doing some futuristic leg flick. Ben did it when Ian was away in Joshua Tree and he subsequently lost interest.

Add me to the list of failed suitors. Spent a good while nervously scrittling around before conceding that I hadn't a clue how to do it. For comparison, Layby Arete took me two goes.

I think a comprehensive descrittling off a rope, then trying it in good conditions would probably do the job. Clearly not 7A though. 7Bish probably nearer the mark.

Thought you were there? Big team day out, Chris Wentworth came along too which made for some memorable conversations en route. Top connies and I saw a bunch of people trying it first. Came back years later (in August) couldn't do it and it turned into a bit of a siege!

Ah, yeah probably. Remember it took us ages to suss first. Detailed memories of that day have probably been supplanted by the time we sandbagged Gaz and Ian on it. After forty minutes peeking over the boulders and sn**gering, Jvan went over and demonstrated it in his tennies, another twenty minutes passed and then Ian threw his boots down the hill. Good times!
