3 Pebbles and a Funeral
September 15, 2003, 05:36:44 pm
Does anybody know the story behind this problem at Widdop? Who originally climbed it and when did the crucial pebble snap off?

Also has anyone done the sit down starts out of the low pod on the bottom side of the Umpleby's arete block? The V2 slopey traverse is surely a misprint at V2 in the guide?

Umm, I think I've done it, but it was a while ago, and I've no idea if the pebble had gone or not. Sorry. Did you do Fight on Black, because that really is good.

Incidentally, I've no idea why FOB is still thought of as V9, I know its a bit technical, but it's no harder than West Side Story.

For some reason I never went to Widdop very often when I lived in Huddersfield, and last time I did I was shown round an excellent circuit across the road at Scout Crag, and the traverse circuit that Micky Johnston subsequently described in a OTE article.

Anyway, I'd never done FOB, and I was hoping that would change last Saturday when I came over with a posse of N Wales lads. Unfortunately I was struck with a pukey/diarrhoea bug and spent most of the day lying on the grass feeling sorry for myself, whilst everyone else climbed.

FOB got done twice - with one person reckoning V8 and the other V8+. It was quite warm too, although there was a bit of a breeze.

It is certainly a stunning line.

On yg.com, 8 out of 17 votes are for easy V9, with only three votes for V8.

i cannot understand the difficulty with this problem. I've never fallen off it.  I'm not wanting to brag .....but I don't see how it can be more than 6b. V8s and 9s are hard! This isn't.

This maybe something to do with the fact that its a rain magnet.
Every time I go its either raining or in a bloody cloud - bunch of arse

Hi Simon, don't know for sure if Al Duff did this problem though imagine that he did as this is the name I remeber discussing with him for the line.

Is that Mr Chadwick? How are you are good sir (if indeed it is you - if not, then hello Pete, whoever you are.),
I figured it was Al. I spoke to Micky J, but he wasn't sure. I don't have a current contact for Al, although I did briefly see him last winter in Llanberis.

I'd be impressed if someone could climb the line sans crucial pebble - but you never know with grit. People do levitate up some blank as hell stuff.

Hi Simon, yeah its me, have just discovered this site (I have just began bouldering again). Hear your taking over the shop, good luck with that and looking forward to the book. Coming over in next month with Steve and Dal, will give you and Mark a call.
