I've read his statement to the Commons, but didn't see/hear it.

I despise and loathe everything the man stands for politically, but that's a great thing to say to the Commons and the nation - and to acknowledge the previous government set in train the enquiry.

Almost statesmanlike?

[And cements his reputation as a social liberal, albeit not a political or economic one]

[There's a thread over on football, btw. Can the mods merge these?]

I saw PMQs.  He got it right, and I believe he was sincere.

(I never imagined be able to say those things about Cameron. I doubt I will again.)

Quote from: guardian newspaper
In the days after the disaster, a narrative took hold that drunk Liverpool fans had caused the disaster by forcing a gate. Allegations were printed that Liverpool fans had pickpocketed the dead and hampered rescue attempts in an infamous Sun front page headlined "The Truth", which led to a still ongoing boycott of the paper on Merseyside. The Sun editor at the time, Kelvin MacKenzie, on Wednesday offered "profuse apologies" for the first time.

The panel found that the origin of the untrue claims was a local Sheffield press agency informed by four senior South Yorkshire police officers, a South Yorkshire Police Federations spokesperson and a local MP, Irvine Patnick.

SIR Irvine Patnick, MP for Sheffield Hallam, for those who were in Sheffield 87-97.  John Mann MP (Lab) has written to DCameron to ask Patnick be stripped of his knighthood. He should have to give account under oath IMO.

Ha, PR agent wannabe spends a couple of months pretending to be an 'expert' on loads of different things..

It would of course be wonderfully ironic if he'd also made up this story for the indy ;)

Mr Margrave was in a ditch off the A614 road:

A motorcyclist has been found alive in a ditch in South Yorkshire almost three days after crashing.

Anthony Margrave, 40, from Goole, East Yorkshire, was reported missing by his partner after he went out on his new motorbike last Tuesday.

Police, who searched for two days, said he was found seriously injured in the 6ft-deep ditch near Thorne where he had been for three nights.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19643846

Quote from: Nightcrawler Tebbit
About 150 people killed because their killers have been freed to kill again.

"Would our courts have sentenced to death three innocent people a year, year in year out? I doubt it

so as long as the number of innocent people hanged by the state remains, on average, below three per year, there's no problem with capital punishment?

next thing we know he'll be publishing a costing comparing the cost of compensating the families of people hung for murder who are later found to be innocent against the cost of the police and court time involved in dealing with muders by previously convicted murderers

mind you, if we use G4S as a private hanging contractor and let them charge all costs to the hangee, we'll be quids in there too

South Yorkshire Police should unreservedly apologize over Hillsborough at the very least.

But not to everybody.

Thanks for the link. Here's Kelvin Mackenzie's question:

Quote
According to extracts published on The Spectator's website, Mr MacKenzie writes: "Now I know - you know, we all know - that the fans were right.
"But it took 23 years, two inquiries, one inquest and research into 400,000 documents, many of which were kept secret under the 30-year no-publication rule, to discover there was a vast cover-up by South Yorkshire Police about the disaster.

"Where does that leave me?"

And here is a perfectly sensible answer from South Yorkshire Police Chief Constable David Crompton

Quote
He chose to write his own headline and he should accept responsibility for it."

Mackenzie trying to re-cast himself as victim is disgusting. What a creep.

The facts were known 23 years ago when Taylor published the first report.

His findings were unambiguous.

That is superb:

Quote
When the officers joined lifeboat crews on the river and tried to intercept the boat, Whelan hurled abuse at them shouting, ‘What are you going to do now?’ and ‘I believe this is out of your jurisdiction’.
