Jon Holmes on 6music:

"David Cameron has just appointed Colonel Gadaffi as his press officer - everybody should be given a 'second chance'."

;D - made me laugh anyway...

Right, so let me get this straight...

The Guardian warned David Cameron about Andy Coulson and his dodgy connections:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/09/phone-hacking-andy-coulson

Paddy Ashdown warned David Cameron about Andy Coulson and his dodgy connections:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/09/phone-hacking-andy-coulson-paddy-ashdown

And he still hired the guy? Not exactly two great references I'm sure you'll agree.

Anyway, this whole aspect reminds me of this quote from The Wire..."hey, you play in dirt - you get dirty" (51 secs):

Did anybody else see Paul McMullan get thrown to the wolves (Coogan, Greg Dyke, Will Self) on Newsnight? Absolutely brilliant! Does he go out of his way not just to sound like an absolute sleazebag but also to look like one too? Suit that looks like it belongs on a con artist, unkempt facial hair, tie half undone with top button open like he was stressed out of his wits before he even came on the show. I'm not one to judge somebody on their appearance but for God's sake man try and do yourself a favour and break free of the 'untrustworthy journalist' stereotype just a little.

Self referring to him as a sort of feral, rat-like sort of creature was a highlight.

"Hitler was nice to dogs!"

classic coogan.

One of the best bits of radio satire I have heard for some time concerning the genesis of the Sun on Sunday

Starts about 6' 30" in

NewCorp drop bid for BSkyB (Murdoch still already owns a large proportion 39.1% of shares in them though)

The rumours are that he may well be going to get rid of all his UK newspaper interests. The idea being that he tries to keep his head down til the shitstorm blows over and goes for ownership of BSkyB again in 2013. It's all interesting stuff to say the least!

Interesting strategy, but I can't see it happening - I think / hope that the UK population / media would pick up on a renewed bid and we'd all suddenly remember all that's happening now.

Just watched today's PMQ on the Guardian site and I'm still amazed that Miliband didn't push Cameron harder on the Andy Coulson issue - he let him get away with ducking the issue again with a "this isn't the issue that the public are interested in at the moment" argument.

Thought Gordon Brown was decent during the debate today - I know he's been picked up regarding his selective memory of events re: his relationship / meetings with NI while he was PM, but I thought he managed a good balance of fact, simmering anger, making his point and a decent dash of humour as well.

Sad news for pikies

and to justify my reference to pykies...
Quote from: Sheffield's Finest Newspaper
Joyce Pyke, 83, from Gleadless, told The Star she shops at TJ Hughes every day.

Their cafe allowed smoking inside right up until the law forced them to ban the practice.

Wow. It's as if those people think the city centre is just that rancid scummy bit round the markets.

Nice to see that all our efforts have been worthwhile and Afghanistan is now a secure and safe place to live.

I don't know if I'm being wildly optimistic about a new era of democracy but every time I read or even think about Murdoch's fall from grace I get almost deliriously happy.

from the guardian a few moments ago - "Eliot Spitzer, the former governor of New York, who resigned over reports that he was a client of prostitution ring, claims at Slate that it is "unlikely" News Corporation's "shoddy ethics were limited to Great Britain". Furthermore, he argues that US law may have been broken on the facts we know already. He refers specifically to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bars American companies from paying bribes abroad.

So acts in Britain by British citizens working on behalf of News Corp. create liability for News Corp., an American business incorporated in Delaware and listed on American financial exchanges.

Spitzer, who notes that News Corp's behaviour has shocked even "cynical British journalists", adds:

The other reason to investigate here is that there is serious doubt that this matter can be investigated properly in Great Britain. Scotland Yard is already implicated, as is [David] Cameron's government. DoJ [the US department of justice] can and should fill the void."
