Sigh... the whole EDL thing is not good...

Part of me wonders whether this is more a symptom of people reacting of the policitcs of fear that has evolved since 9-11 - than some cleverly organised C18/NF/BNP right wing uber plan...

Its all a bit sad how in the last 10 years the perception of Muslim communities (largely in the popular press) has gone from them being 'benign and unusual/different' to 'harbouring/developing terrorists and fear..'

Its all a bit sad how in the last 10 years the perception of Muslim communities (largely in the popular press) has gone from them being 'benign and unusual/different' to 'harbouring/developing terrorists and fear..'

and this is as depressing as it's terrifying.

The group also appears to be drawing support from the armed forces. Its online armed forces division has 842 members and the EDL says many serving soldiers have attended its demonstrations. A spokeswoman for the EDL, whose husband is a serving soldier, said: "The soldiers are fighting Islamic extremism in Afghanistan and Iraq and the EDL are fighting it here … Not all the armed forces support the English Defence League but a majority do."

So cashier them then!

Laws applies his enthusiasm for economic liberalism in a later essay on health, calling for the replacement of the National Health Service by a national health insurance scheme. From what I've seen the IDF action on the boat was reasoned, proportionate and justified.  The Isreali blockade is a different subject entirely.

I am always amazed at how people can get so upset about Palestine and ignore things that are just categorically worse on every measure.  It's a bit like protesting about foie gras and ignoring the battery chicken issue.
