Victory for science.

http://www.indexoncensorship.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Singh_judgement_01Apr10.pdf

Its a bit of a non sequitur to sue for libel in the first place when it was based on fact though wasn't it?

Whatever prat of a judge who failed to throw this out at the first hurdle should be struck-off.

But that's exactly why the libel laws need to be totally changed.

There are loads of other cases like this and it's fucking nonsense. This victory (although only minor on the face of it) is a major step in the right direction0 (in my uneducated opinion!).

Interesting.

OK I know most people find tax stuff really boring but this is worth knowing...........

I'm not going to wade through all the figures but the most interesting / worrying aspect this raises is the general tone of Tory fiscal policy. Two points jump out immediately.

1. Tax breaks for married couples. The Tories say that they haven't decided exactly what this will be but that it will benefit all married couples (and those in civil partnerships). However, the only concrete idea that they have put forward on this is to allow the transfer of unused tax allowances which is interesting as this will only benefit those couples where one partner earns less than their personal allowance.

Doesn't take a genius to work out that pretty much the only couples who will get anything worthwhile out of this will be those who can afford to have just one partner earning a living while the other stays at home. i.e. The rich.

2. Reduce the rate of CT to 25% (and that of small companies to 20%). All well and good until you see that they will pay for it by scrapping the Annual Investment Allowance. This is where companies can get tax relief of 100% on the first £50k (now raised to £100k in the budget, a move applauded by small business leaders) of expenditure on plant & machinery (and integral features). The AIA is not just a great thing for small businesses (I have seen the benfit to many of them first hand) but it boosts the manufacturing industry and encourages investment and growth from the bottom up.

So again, we have a "tax break" that will reduce the CT bills of big companies meaning more money for those at the top while the small companies and grassroots industry gets shafted.

I haven't time to look any further at the moment but these two jumped out at me. Seriously, anyone who believes that the Tories have sounds fiscal policies needs to dig a little further. Scratch the surface and it's the same old story.

Help the rich and fuck the rest of you. Shame most people will fall for it.

How we all nearly snuffed it (or "Lets all get pissed, its the end of the world!")

Now I can't prove the veracity of this, but if its true its bloody scary! And makes you wonder how often this kind of thing happens.
