Too vinegary for my liking these days.  Cholula is a great, fruity alternative.

can you actually damage yourself eating hot chilis then, or were those lads just enrolling themselves in the Gritstone Association of Yeomanry Showponies?

Sorry the "you" in my last post was the royal "you", i.e. "a person", not specifically you.

Not sure, the active ingredient is capsaicin and thats whats used in pepper sprays, which is supposedly used 'cause it doesn't cause any long term damage.  Pepper spary (and indeed the burn from strong chillies) hurts  because this binds to nerve endings and stimulates the nerve, simulating pain, but it doesn't actually cause any damage (see the Mechanism of action section).

So whilst it is really uncomfortable and indeed painful you're unlikely to actually damage yourself (I've been trying, but have not tested pepper spray in the eyes, and have absolutely no desire to try!).

There he went in various rooms, took a camera and a mobile phone which he tried to use to call his friends.

I'd have loved to have seen him trying to get decent reception with a camera, then dialing someone on the number "play ISO delete menu flash flash flash".

Isn't that just the business model? The same principle as VHS vs Betamax, except here the competition isn't really superior.

With Apple you've always paid more for hardware but benefited from proper customer service. Kind of the opposite to Linux, where you pay nothing and get nothing.

Indeed. I think Apple are really struggling: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8479912.stm

Likes of Amazon etc were run at a loss for years too, I think.

Could well be I've never investigated their business model.  Might explain why record companies don't like iTunes though (i.e. they can't compete and have to sell at Apple's prices).

Actually thats a common misconception and not really the model employed by most Open-Source software business'.

Taking the GNU/Linux distribution Fedora as an example they give away their product (the distribution) for free.  Users can then explicitly pay for support for a given period.

Another example is the guy who started off the FOSS movement, Richard Stallman, who set out to develop a POSIX compliant free and open source operating system (known as Hurd), various compilers (GCC) and a text editor (Emacs.

Stallmans approach was flexible, if someone liked his product but told him that it was lacking a few features that they wanted, he would offer to develop and incorporate those features for a fee (often in preference over the features he felt were important), but because the GPL applied to the software the improvements would then be available to all who used the software, so everyone benefited.
