I think there are distinctions to be drawn. Jade Goody is thick and ignorant and her rise to fame and riches is a product of the general publics satisfaction with lowest common denominator television. She has in the course of her career expressed views and opinions that are distastful. The sad fact is these views are probably to a large extent the views of the common man in the street, as that is after all what she is. She has chosen to stick her head above the celebrity parapet, and as such she is fair game for comment on her actions and statements. Regardless of her medical state. However revelling in her impending demise seems a totally different bucket of kidneys. She's not Pol Pot, or Hitler, or etc etc etc.... She's just a stupid person in a shit situation which she probably isn't well prepared to handle. I wish her well for the future and hope that her current course of action realises the results she is hoping for. I still think she's thick and ignorant, but these things aren't crimes. I'm more concerned about a society that wishes to create this type of celebrity than the celebrity themselves.

My analysis of this thread recently has revealed two options for the BNP to improve their popularity

1) Employ J Goody as their spokesperson - she is a well known thick racist and now that she is dying people are cutting her some slack.

2) My favourite option - All senior BNP members should start dying, then the public will feel more kindly disposed towards them. When the senior members die they are replaced by the next most senior members who will also start dying and so on. This way all BNP members will see the image of their party improve during their lifetime and the rest of us will soon be rid of them.

As a statistician I was pleased to read today an article on the BBC web-site advocating the use of appropriate statistics when reporting in the media (in this case including numbers when referring to percentages).

A light-hearted book on this and other abuses is "How to Lie with Statistics" by Darrell Huff.

(I'm currently  with some surgeons idiots who want to simply quote percentages in a report  )

After the big bushfires over here last month one of our best current affairs strands made a superb chronological record of the events of the 7th/8th of February. I don't know if you can download it over there but if you can it is well worth watching to get some idea of what it was like here. We hit 49 degrees C (with winds in excess of 50 knots 7 humidity at just 6%!) at our place that day and although we're 50-odd miles from where the bad fires were, it was still quite a harrowing day and night.
