Anybody bother taking out travel Insurance for font???

I've got the european health insurance card so as far as I can see its no different than taking a trip up to Northumberland. Obviously there's cancellation cover, etc...

If one of us snaps an ankle we just make a call and get taken to a state hospital and good old blighty takes care of us no???

afaik yes, although the nice french medical system takes care of you :) which means that *most* of it's services are free to EHIC card holders but you might have to pay upfront for some (specialist) things and claim it back from the NHS when you get back. Every time i've had to use A&E at Nemours for twisted ankles it's been swift, efficient and free for a consult+xray type visit. We had to pay for medication and an ankle support at the local pharmacy though, the hospital didn't dish that out for free.

if you fuck yourself up somewhere that required specialists to come and get you (like when skiiing and you get a piste rescue etc) then you'd get stung.

bear in mind what you're paying for with travel insurance is the above, plus shit like personal accident (fuck yourself up), personal liability (fuck someone else up), loss of passport, personal belongings etc.

Its worth looking at having a premium bank account that offers thing like holiday insurance with it.
On ours (with barclays) we have travel insurance including winter sports, full european car breakdown cover, free will writing and some other stuff I can't remember.
It costs us basically (wait for it.....) fuck all (ha) each month cos she gets it at 50% discount for staff. Its well worth it IMHO and you never have to bother renewing this stuff cos it continues as long as you have the account.

My girlfriend broke her Talus at Isatis and had an op at Font hospital. It was easiest to fly her back to the UK and the Northern General in Sheffield.

For the little cost, it's worth getting travel insurance to cover you for repatriation back to the UK and any ambulance costs that might not be covered by your EHIC card.

She didn't have either :(

 :agree:

The missus had to spend last Easter's Font trip in l'hopital where the first question was "have you got insurance".  Thereafter everything was sorted and there was no question of payment.

Some years ago (another) missus fell off her motorbike in Germany and had to fork out everything up front for repatriation and then claim it back because she had insurance but didn't have the details or certificate with her (dozy cow).

The morale is to take out insurance if you can afford it (or get it free) and to make sure you take the details of it with you.

I agree with what the others have said, it's so cheap to get basic insurance that it seems silly to go without.  better to fork out a few quid and know you'll be totally covered if something does go wrong, chances are if you have the insurance, nothing will.
