rope access kit wanted
November 22, 2009, 06:34:30 pm
Well, I've got a start in this and it seems ok. Fortunately this means I can avoid the family teaching vocation for a few more years yet at least.  Anyway, to get more work more reliably with the two companies I'm 'in' with, I could do with my own kit.  So does anyone have any of the following that they want rid of:
harness, chest harness, stop, croll, hand ascender.... well pretty much everything really except I've got a shunt already!
Any tips for other places it may be worth asking? caving websites maybe?
failing that, if anyone needs a level 1 grafter....
cheers

I've found Bernies and Inglesport good for caving stuff in the past.

make sure you get the relevant certs for any gear you buy

You can usually get away with a few missing certs, the harness is the crucial one. In my experience the kind of company who expects you to have your own kit is unlikely to send you to the kind of jobs where they get checked... but don't count on it.

Kit pops up on UKC occasionally, or try Rigg Access.

Wasn't PaulyDB selling an ID a while back?

Never had certs, never been asked for certs, anywhere.

I'd *ahem* nick a mint full kit for you in a trice if you were in Kazakhstan and not the UK  ;) nudge  ;)

Oh do yourself a favour and get an ID not a stop, hateful things.

Our place is pretty strict on kit certs these days. Hitch n Hike in the Bamford garden centre is as good a place as any to buy access kit.

yeah, that's very much the impression I've been given so far.  Which is fine by me.

Anyway, thanks for all the replies so far, I'm sure y'all understand I'm just looking for a slightly cheaper alternative than simply buying everything brand new as that would roughly equate to 2 weeks graft on my lowly level 1 wage.  By about day 10, that fact would be getting psychologically pretty hard to take I reckon!

I've actually got some other non-access work (painting zzzzzz) this week and next but could do to get some kit sorted for work the week after.  I'll see what happens.

I think naivity might be getting the better of me here - not a clue!

Got a well used stop and right hand ascender, still in perfect working order. You can have them both for £40.

Almost all my caving srt kit is retired rope access kit. the rest is *retired* rope access kit. Petzl prices are proof that bad sh*t happens to good people.

^ Eh?

Last time I looked (tax return time last year) Petzl kit was fully tax-deductible.  IMO buying secondhand safety kit is madness*; it's cheap and gives BIG returns over it's lifetime.

(* for example:  I dropped my shunt 60m recently while on a structure, someone below pocketted it and scuttled off.  I wrote it off instantly (and it didn't matter, as I carry two) but someone is probably using that kit now...)
