Crags Classics
October 11, 2008, 09:37:17 am
As promised, here's a thread dedicated to hosting classic, interesting, quaint or otherwise articles from great climbing mags of the past. I guess they needn't be from Crags. For those of you too young to remember, Crags was the great iconoclastic British rock climbing mag of the 70s and early 80s, famed for its cutting edge reporting, clean designs and biting wit (sarcasm). Founded by Geoff Birtles, the mag later mutated into High and eventually Climb.

Here's Walk on the Wild Side a whimsical piece from the late great Al Rouse, reflecting on his decline into mountaineerdom. Published in Issue No. 11

What a great idea, I really enjoyed the Jim Perrin article you sent.

One problem you might find though is that flickr may delete the pics and they'll probably claim that its copyrighted material and request evidence of permission to reproduce.  I think (but am not sure) alternatives such as photobucket or image shack may be less bothered (although they probably do have it in the terms of use somewhere).

If you want I've a server where they can all be placed, just email them to me and I'll stick 'em up and let you know the URL to post.

Cheers Neil. Clearly, this might be an issue. Lets see what happens and if needs be I'll take you up on the offer.

Anyway, here's Travels With a Donkey, a picaresque adventure from Pete Livesey.

This is a bit weird, as I was just scanning some articles for my brother and have stuck them on flickr. Actually I just photographed them, I hope it's still legible. Re hosting - can you put these on the vimeo site?

Anyway, and in keeping with the biography thread, some classic Jerry action for you.

States trip 82/3:

They're pushing it a bit to be honest.

Not a problem, like you say, lets see how things pan out.

The photographed ones are a bit hard to read, if you don't have a scanner (or can't be bothered to scan them) then perhaps shooting one page in portrait would be better, and doing it by a window in daytime without a flash might improve the legibility.

P.S. If you use the
Code: [Select]
[img\] [/img] tags then the pictures will appear in the forum  ;)

Walk on the Wild Side by Al Rouse

Travels with a Donkey by Pete Livesy

P.P.S. - What are you're flickr usernames and could you add these to the UKbouldering group

But I'm too lazy to do all that work!

I thought they'd work better as a standalone image than inserted into the forum, but will go with the flow. I've tried scanning but they don't come out very well and it takes fuckin ages to do. I have a mountain of old comics and a couple of weeks at home recovering from an op coming up, so any requests can be looked up!

I'll have another go.

Here we are - Jerry conquering the world in 82-83 and trying Fires for the first time:

I think it looks good with them embedded in the forum, the thread then reads like a hybrid magazine of all the articles

really enjoyed the articles so far, just wanted to say thanks to all who have put the effort in to get them online.

I can only remember back as far as OTE issue 20something, and have always been curious about Crags. Great stuff  :)

I deliberately posted links rather than embedding, but as you say, it looks OK on the page.

Last one for now, here's the Perrin article that kicked the idea off.

Thanks Andy, great to read that again.  I think it was reading it originally which somehow inspired me (and Ena) to go and do Coronation Street, although we limited ourselves to a couple of pints of Scrumpy the night before!

Another one for you now, the classic John Allen interview from Crags 8. The return interview from OTE 2 will be posted tomorrow!

Brilliant assessment of Big Ron's contribution to climbing!

Is that the beam from the Broomgrove wall Mr Moffatt is hanging off, bit spooky reading something by Alan Rouse and seeing that after. Many happy days at that place although my knees would say different, is it still open?

Re Moffatt beam - I thought it was Sheffield Poly Gym?

Fiend - both Allen and Moffatt put their improvement down to extensive top roping! It's the only way to get good really fast!

Anyway, here's part 2, Allen's return.

Thanks to M for scanning them.

Here's Jonathan Livingstone Steelfingers by Pete Livesey, a piece of futurology from Crags 16. Its interesting to compare Pete's predictions with what actually transpired. I've left out two (not very interesting) full page photos.

This is fucking brilliant, Alf Bridge's 'The Technique of Falling' reprinted in Crags 16. Check out the strides. CFK is my all time climbing hero.

Same place - the Al rouse memorial wall was at the poly gym on broomgrove road. Its not been open since '96 as far as i know, supposedly the wall is still there though, hidden behind plasterboard.

Whilst we're at it, has anyone got a copy of Dangerous Crocodile Snogging? I lent mine to Tetler on pain of death should he lose it, he promptly did just that and blamed his housemate. At the time he was renting on Hunter House road and happened on Jerry's original board still in situ in the cellar.

Do you mean the article in high by Dave Pegg?

If so, I think I still have it. I'll check when I get in.

Trying to do a bit of research into grit history a bit at the mo - anyone with anymore of these to post up? Anything mid-seventies to mid-nineties would be good, really like to see some of the coverage of Dawes' '86 season.

Whilst we're at it, has anyone got a copy of Dangerous Crocodile Snogging?

I do.

If you've still got it Andy, would really appreciate you posting a scan/ photo of it up. There were two mags which I got thinking I'd keep them forever - this one and Paul P's Strone article. Both got lost by 'mates'  :'(

Might be worth asking the guys at Joe Browns whether they'd be able to help out. They always used to have a load of old (and in some cases, very old) magazines in the staff rooms. Capel Curig was especially well stocked in them.

Someone at Big Rock MK wall has two boxes of climber and hillwalker circa 92-97 and is offering them up to anyone interested. I picked up three copies.
