Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

I have a PC running XP - if i've not used the computer for a while (say 8 hours) when I start it up I get a whole host of weird application errors and sometimes even "stop errors". As soon as I restart the PC then starts up normally.

I've just got used to switching it on, then restarting it 5 minutes later but obviously this behaviour isn't desirable.

What could cause this? I would guess it's hardware related; it almost seems like something isn't "warmed up"?

i had these when running xp, I dont really have an answer, but after a quick format they seemed to go away for a few months.

It's got to be a hardware issue. It only occurs when the PC is cold.

I clear the logs and keep track from now on.

Your error codes should narrow down where the issue is.  Maybe.

just do a re-install. Its worth it in the long run

A re-install may well be helpful, but it won't cure a hardware problem.  I'd probably try to narrow down the issue first, Bubbs.

I recon 90% of the time it'll cure the problem

It's not a problem with windows, it's a hardware issue. As soon as the PC is warm all subsequent restarts are perfectly fine. I can't see how a problem with windows would only occur when the PC was cold.

Also, I only upgraded to XP SP3 a few weeks ago so it's a spanky new install anyways.

Yeah, OK.  You're approaching the problem from the other direction but it's equally reasonable.

Note your stop codes anyway, it's always nice to know what's going on.

Cold boot issues can be motherboard specific. Have a look on the net for reports of the motherboard doing it. It's also possible that it is something to do with your HDD and your chipset drivers. I've known cold boot issues to be solved with a BIOS upgrade so you might want to give that a shot. I's update all your chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website, and if that doesn't help then do a BIOS upgrade. If that still doesn't help then post back on here!
